Class 6A state soccer quarterfinal previews

The Derby soccer team will play Washburn Rural on the road Tuesday in the 6A quarterfinals.

EAST REGION  

No. 2 Olathe Northwest (14-3-1) vs. No. 13 Blue Valley Northwest (7-10-1) 

Olathe Northwest got past two Olathe schools on the way to the quarterfinals, with four different Ravens' scoring goals.  

In the 2-1 win over Olathe North in the regional semifinal, first-half goals were scored by junior Noah Conover and senior Jake Thomas.  

Senior Dylan Naidu and junior Colin Gann scored second-half goals in Northwest's 2-0 win over Olathe East. Senior goalkeeper Ben Steffens had the shutout.  

Northwest will face Blue Valley Northwest (7-10-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at CBAC Soccer Stadium in Olathe.  

The Huskies pulled out two overtime wins on the road to reach the quarterfinals, beating Olathe South 3-2 and Shawnee Mission East 2-1.  

Shawnee Mission East led the Huskies 1-0 for most of the regional final, but the Huskies knotted it up at 1 when Ryan Masterson scored off a cross from Sam McIntosh.  

Joseph Rahto scored the game-winning goal in overtime off Gustavo Silva's free kick into the box.  

The Huskies went through a six-match winless streak from mid-September into October, dropping five straight games and then taking a tie. They also dropped their final two regular-season games to Blue Valley Southwest and Pembrooke Hill (Mo.) before pulling out the thrilling regional wins.  

No. 6 Shawnee Mission West (11-4-1) vs. No. 9 Olathe West (10-7-1) 

Shawnee Mission West opened regional play with a 2-1 win over Shawnee Mission Northwest before advancing to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Kansas City Wyandotte.  

The Vikings are 8-1-1 over their last 10 games.  

They will meet Olathe West at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Shawnee Mission Complex soccer for a trip to the Class 6A semifinals on Friday in Olathe.  

Olathe West is led by Elyes Ellouz, who leads Class 6A with 23 goals on the season.  

The Owls took a 2-0 win over Blue Valley in the regional opener behind goals from Gage Daniels and Carson Guenthner.  

"Huge win for us to gain confidence," Olathe West coach Matt Trumpp said.  

Olathe West took a 2-1 win over Blue Valley Northwest. The Owls trailed early after giving up a goal on a penalty kick. Ellouz knotted up the score five minutes after the penalty kick. 

Daniels scored the game-winner five minutes into the second half.  

"Taking down the 1 seed on their home field was another confidence booster for this team," Trumpp said. 

Trumpp noted the Owls had to play most of this season without Daniels and that his return has made a huge impact.  

WEST REGION  

No. 1 Washburn Rural (17-0-0) vs. No. 4 Derby (15-1-2)  

The unbeaten Junior Blues have scored 82 goals on the season, just four away from the single-season record they set in 2009 when they won the state title. 

Rural opened with a 7-0 win over Wichita Northwest, beating Northwest for the second time this season. Easton Bradstreet and Porter Schafersman each scored four goals and Schafersman dished out two assists. Wyatt Arnold earned the shutout.  

The Junior Blues beat Wichita East 1-0 in the regional final. The only goal came on an own goal from the Blue Aces. Sophomore Benett Hallauer hit a corner into the box and it deflected off a Wichita East player.  

Arnold recorded the shutout, his 36th of his career. Rural has posted nine shutouts on the season, allowing just eight goals. The Junior Blues haven't surrendered more than one goal in a game on  the season.  

Rural will play host to Derby at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.  

The Junior Blues played the Panthers in a regular-season game last year, earning a 4-1 win. Derby won at Washburn Rural in 2018 in the state quarterfinals. Rural earned quarterfinal wins against Derby in 2006, 2007 and 2012, all at Washburn Rural.  

The Panthers took a 4-0 win over Junction City in its regional opener. Andy Denesongkham scored in the second minute. Angel Vielmas scored the Panthers' second and third goals before Boaz Day netted the final goal.  

Derby won the regional final in dramatic fashion, beating Lawrence Free State 1-0 in double-overtime. Andy Denesongkham scored off an assist from Caleb Day with 2:18 left in the second session.  

No. 2 Dodge City (17-0-1) vs. No. 3 Wichita North (16-1-1) 

Defending champion Dodge City will play host to Wichita North at 6 p.m. in Tuesday's quarterfinal. 

The Red Demons haven't lost a game since the 2019 season.  

Dodge opened regional play with a 7-0 win over Wichita West. There wer 23 minutes left on the clock when the officials called the game due to lightning. Angel Lopez 2 scored two goals while Jose Holguin, David Garcia, Aron Martinez, Mike Sandoval and Francisco Hernandez each had a goal apiece. Assists were recorded by Gonzalo, Garcia, Holguin and Mario Olivares. Daniel Ruiz picked up the shutout. 

In a 6-2 win over Topeka High in the regional final, Holguin and Luis Brown scored two goals each. Marintez and Sebastian Marquez also had goals. Garcia dished out four assists, while Aron Martinez and Mario Olivares had one each. 

The Red Demons have outscored opponents 75-7 on the season.  

Wichita North beat Liberal 7-1 in the regional opener.  

North took a 1-0 victory over Manhattan on a penalty kick from Francisco Lopez in the regional final. 

North captured the first Wichita City League title in program history.
