Class 4A state soccer quarterfinal recaps: Convincing shutouts send Augusta, Miege, Trinity, Tonganoxie to state semifinals

Augusta beat Hayden 4-0 in Tuesday's Class 4-1A state quarterfinal game to reach the state semifinals for the first time in program history.

Augusta soccer coach Dusty Buell isn't shy when talking about the offensive prowess of his team this season.

"I believe we have the best attack in 4A," Buell said.

Certainly his Orioles have done more than enough to back up that claim. Led by a pair of goals from senior Kaden Kearney, Augusta shook free from a scoreless game in Tuesday night's Class 4A state quarterfinal against visiting Hayden to take a convincing 4-0 victory.

Augusta (17-2-0) advanced to Friday's 5 p.m. state semifinal in Topeka where the Orioles will take on five-time defending champion Miege (11-8-0), which blasted Kansas City Christian 8-0 on Tuesday.

The 7 p.m. semifinal pits Tonganoxie (12-6-1) against Wichita Trinity Academy (14-5-0), which has finished runner-up to Miege each of the past two seasons. Tonganoxie edged Frontier League rival Eudora 2-0 on Tuesday, while Trinity rolled to a 7-0 win over Coffeyville.

Facing a Hayden team that ended its postseason run in 2019 in the quarterfinals, Augusta was looking to administer a little payback on Tuesday night at home. But for a half, the Orioles and Wildcats played to a scoreless deadlock, neither team able to mount much offense.

Just before halftime, however, Hayden's Daxton Ham received a red card. Hayden had to play the rest of the game with only 10 players on the field and against Augusta's powerful attack, it eventually became too much of a challenge for the Wildcats.

Kearney scored early in the second half off a feed from fellow senior Payton Ball to break the deadlock and not long afterwards, Cody Meckel followed with a goal of his own for a 2-0 lead.

Logan Ruddle scored unassisted before Kearney added his second goal late as Augusta fed off its momentum to win going away. Ball finished with three assists.

"This wasn't about any of our opponents, it is always about us, who we are, together," Buell said. "We trust one another, we love one another and we play for one another. This team has faced some adversity throughout the season and they have come back stronger.

"Connor Inlow in the middle Cooper Buell and Cody Meckel with engines that do not stop in the holding midfield positions and then the three-headed monster up top in Kaden Kearney, Payton Ball and Dominic Rios. Those guys have taken this program to the next level and made believers out of everyone here in this community."

The semifinal appearance is the first in program history, coming on the heels of Augusta capturing its first league championship this season with a perfect run through the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail III League.

"We had a lot of guys step up and play their best soccer when it counted," Buell said. "We are happy we are we won our school's first league championship. We are happy that we won a regional championship. We are happy we won a state quarterfinal game for the first time in school history, We are happy we are going to the Final Four. But don't mistake that happiness for contentment. We are not content to make it this far. This journey is not done. We are going to soak up every moment together, but make no mistake, we are going to Topeka to win."

Hayden finished the season 13-6-0.

WICHITA TRINITY ACADEMY 7, COFFYEVILLE 0

State runner-up each of the past two seasons, Trinity has had the look of a team capable of taking that next step and winning a state title.

The Knights sure looked that part on Tuesday, going on the road to manhandle Coffeyville.

Trinity led 3-0 at halftime and poured it on from there. Cooper Mathews scored twice in the first half and finished the game with his third hat trick in as many postseason games this year. Colin Green added a pair of goals while Cole Mathews also scored.

A seventh goal came on an own goal by Coffeyville.

Trinity has now outscored its three postseason opponents by a combined 21-0 score.

Coffeyville ended the season with a 14-5-0 record.

BISHOP MIEGE 8, KANSAS CITY CHRISTIAN 0

The beat goes on.

Winner of five straight Class 4-1A state championships and 27 straight postseason games going into Tuesday night's contest, Bishop Miege made sure those streaks stayed in tact with relative ease. The Stags scored seven goals in the first half to overwhelm the KC Christian, which was the highest remaining seed in the east bracket.

Five different players scored for the Stags, three of those being freshmen.

Miege reaches the state semifinals for the sixth straight year and ninth time in the last 10 years. The Stags have feasted on 4-1A competition once it reaches the Final Four, going 14-1 in their 15 state semifinal appearances.

KC Christian finished the season 13-5-1.

TONGANOXIE 2, EUDORA 1

Tonganoxie needed overtime in the regular-season finale to get past Frontier League rival Eudora, taking a 2-1 win.

There was no such drama in Tuesday's rematch.

Lukas Parizek scored twice, once in each half and the Chieftain defense kept Eudora's most prolific scoring team in program history in check throughout to advance to the state semifinals.

Parizek scored at the 18-minute mark of the first half to give Tonganoxie a 1-0 lead that stood. Eudora throught it had scored an equalizer in the closing moments of the first half but the goal was waved off for an offsides call on the Cardinals.

Parizek added his second goal with 26:20 left in the game and Tonganoxie keeper Jackson McWilliams kept the shutout in place.

Eudora finished the season 13-5-1.
