Maize South reaped the benefits of an unbeaten run to its first state boys soccer title, sweeping the Class 5A individual awards from the Kansas High School Soccer Coaches Association as part of the organization’s All-State teams.
Senior forward Alvaro Quezada, junior midfielder Vitor Geromel, junior defender Caden Wait and senior goalkeeper Andrew Cole were named 5A players of the year at their respective positions, while Rey Ramirez earned coach of the year honors after leading the Mavericks to a 21-0 record. Maize South defeated Blue Valley Southwest 3-0 in the 5A championship game after finishing second to the Timberwolves in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
It was the second straight 5A coach of the year honor for Ramirez, while Geromel was named 5A forward of the year as a sophomore.
Class 6A champion Mill Valley and runner-up Olathe West dominated the individual awards in the state’s biggest class. Mill Valley senior Nico Pendleton was named 6A midfielder of the year and his senior teammate, Owen Peachee, was voted as the state’s top defender. Olathe West seniors Gage Daniels and Cole Morris earned forward of the year and goalkeeper of the year, respectively.
Mill Valley’s Jason Pendleton was named 6A coach of the year after leading the Jaguars to a 17-1-1 record.
In Class 4-1A, champion Bishop Miege claimed two of the individual awards. Junior Cooper Greene was voted the top forward, while senior Xander Christian was named defender of the year as the Stags finished 15-5-1 and won their seventh consecutive state title.
Runner-up Baldwin had the midfielder of the year in senior Caleb Carr. Baldwin coach Matt McCune shared 4-1A coach of the year honors with McPherson’s Chris Adrian. Tonganoxie junior Jackson McWilliams and Buhler senior Jax Frederick were named goalkeepers of the year.
The state coaches also recognized Gordon Wetmore III, Anthony Sobolevsky, Mike McNally, Phil Gomez, Scott Dryer as referees of the year.
