Wichita North's Class 6-5A girls wrestling regional on Saturday wasn't perfect for the home team. Dodge City, No. 2 in the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, made sure of that by qualifying 10 wrestlers for next week's state tournament and defeating top-ranked North by 37 points for the team title.
But North still had its moments, most notably with individual championships from juniors Rodah Bengi at 115 pounds and Diana Uresti at 120.
Bengi, a fourth-place finisher at state a year ago, improved to 36-0 with a 20-7 major decision over Garden City's Sara Chapa in the final. Uresti, a state qualifier at 126 last season, breezed through the 120-pound bracket by pinning three of her four opponents, including Hays sophomore Addison Otte in the championship.
The duo led a group of eight state qualifiers for North, which will try to claim the top spot in the 6-5A championships on Feb. 23-24 at Park City's Hartman Arena.
"For the most part, I think things fell like we thought they would looking at the brackets," Wichita North coach Quinton Burgess said. "There were maybe a couple of things that got away from us and could have been a little better."
Uresti took care of her business with a first-period pin of Bishop Carroll's Thao Nguyen and second-period pins of Liberal's Amelia Alarcon and Otte. She earned the matchup with Otte with an 8-5 decision over Garden City's Alyxia Serrano.
"She's been very determined this year," Burgess said of Uresti, who is 34-4. "She cut down to another weight class this year to give herself a strength advantage.
"A lot of our girls having success really bought into our summer strength program, and Diana really dove off the deep end with all the things we've asked her to do."
Only two of Uresti's losses this season have occurred in her weight class. The others came when Burgess had Uresti, who is ranked third in 6-5A at 120, wrestle up to battle in a more competitive bracket.
"I've told her I really appreciate watching you wrestle," Burgess said. "I would definitely say her investment and her talent has given her a certain level of confidence. She stays pretty true to what she does and I think that's been a big benefit to her."
Bengi will enter state as one of the favorites after taking her performance to a higher level this season. Burgess said Bengi, who Is ranked No. 1 in her weight class, brings a complete package to wrestling.
"I hate to go out on a limb because I'll hear from kids from years back," Burgess said. "But she might be the most special combination of talent and having her head in the right place of any kids I've coached in a long time.
"Physically, it's her speed. She's unbelievably fast on her feet. Mentally, it's her focus. I think it's unshakable. I've gotten to where I don't even try to say anything out there during a match. She's so locked in on what she's doing."
North, which finished second to Washburn Rural at state last season, also qualified Rodah's sister, Bilhah Bengi (101), returning state champion Larisa Garcia (109), Sandra Arellano (132), Edna Flores (170), Nathalia Hernandez-Martinez (191) and Emily Jasenthuleanage (235).
Great Bend senior and reigning state champion Bre Ridgeway was named the North regional's wrestler of the year after winning the 132-pound class. Dodge City's Tate Lowe received the regional's coach of year award.
Two other Greater Wichita Athletic League wrestlers joined Bengi and Uresti as champions at the Wichita North regional. Bishop Carroll sophomore Karla Martinez pinned Great Bend's Haylee Holinde in the second period to win at 191 pounds, while Wichita West sophomore Druzzla Johnson pinned Dodge City's Sindy Gutierrez in the first period at 235 to improve to 21-0.
