Olathe Northwest girls win 1st regional wrestling title in school history | East/Southeast wrestling standouts

SPRING HILL GIRLS WRESTLING REGIONAL

In its first year under head coach Doug Newcomb, Olathe Northwest's girls won a wrestling regional title for the first time in the school's history. Newcomb earned the Regional Coach of the Year award as the Ravens took first at their Class 6-5A regional with 133 points, beating out runner-up Spring Hill at 123 and third place Olathe North at 120.5. Northwest had six state qualifiers, all of whom advanced to the regional final in their weight classes.

Cameryn West (101), Emmy Keller (109) Caroline Foeller (143), Chloe Harris (155) and Val Galligan (170) won individual regional titles. Hailey Arthur finished as the runner-up at 132.

Harris was one of 12 wrestlers at the event to walk with three pinfall victories. West earned two pinfall victories in a total of 2:03 match time. The other three Olathe Northwest regional champions won their first two matches by pinfall before needing decision victories to clinch first place.

Keller closed out with a 8-4 decision over Catherine Duong of Olathe North, Foeller took a 7-6 decision over Sara Soureshjani of Shawnee Mission South and Galligan earned an 8-3 decision over Zahra Andela of Olathe West.

Arthur picked up two pinfall victories to start the tournament, but finished second after Brynn Lowe of Blue Valley Southwest pinned her at the tail end of the first period in the championship match.

Despite finishing sixth, Blue Valley Southwest was the only other team with multiple regional champs. Along with Lowe, Hannah Glynn made quick work of the 120-pound division. Glynn pinned all three of her opponents in a combined 1:00, a tournament best.

Spring Hill took runner-up without a single regional champion, but did advance nine of its 10 wrestlers competing at regionals. Gracie Oppeau (126) and Izzy Farris (138) took second place in their weight classes. Oppeau picked up three pinfall victories before dropping a 17-0 tech fall against Nicole Redmon of Olathe South. Farris had two first-period pinfall victories before herself getting pinned by Shelby Davis of Gardner-Edgerton halfway through the first-period.

Nevaeh Tauer (143), Campbell Mermis (155) and Avery Feeback (235) earned third-place finishes while Jay Yoder (115), Kaylynn Ottenschneider (120) and Lexi Suter (170) took fourth place.

Olathe North's Kaylan Hitchcock won the 115-pound weight class with three pinfall victories, including a pin against Lilly Kepler of Gardner-Edgerton in the final. Olathe North advanced seven wrestlers to state, including four competitors earning runner-up finishes.

Akaiya Tinsley of Olathe East won the 191-pound regional title with a 4-3 ultimate tiebreaker to defeat Elizabeth Ruggles of Olathe North.

Makayla Rivera of Olathe West won at 235. Rivera picked up a quick pinfall 17 seconds into her first match, but her finals match against Hailey Conley of Olathe North took a little bit longer. She pinned Conley at the 5:20 mark.

CHANUTE GIRLS WRESTLING REGIONAL

Columbus took first with 161.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Eureka at 114 and third place Chanute at 103. Columbus had eight wrestlers advance to state, including Addison Saporito (109) and Brooklyn Lima (138) winning individual regional titles.

Saporito earned three second-period pinfall victories, including a pin over E`owynn Reynard of Burlington in championship. Lima picked up a 16-0 technical fall and a 10-2 major decision on her way to the finals. She secured a pinfall over Makaylae Rusk of Fort Scott during the late stages of their championship match.

Grace Noel (101) and Sophie Lloyd (120) finished runner-up while Madelyn Garcia (126), Aubree Saporito (132) and Jailyn Rodriguez (143) took third. Emily Welch (155) rounded out the team's state qualifiers with her fourth-place finish.

Chanute had six wrestlers advance to state. Grace Thompson (132) and Lena Aguilar (170) finished as runner-up in their weight classes. Thompson picked up a pinfall win and a 3-1 decision before getting pinned by Gabby Rusk of Fort Scott in the finals. Aguilar picked up a pinfall and 5-2 decision before suffering a first-period pinfall lost against Kylee Eastwood of Prairie View in the finals.

Paola's Kailyn Younger won the 126-pound division with four pinfalls secured over a tournament-low 3:53 match time. Younger finished off the final in 55 seconds with a pinfall over Hanna Bailey of Girard.

TOPEKA SEAMAN GIRLS WRESTLING REGIONAL

Bonner Springs took third at the Topeka Seaman regional with 94 points, finishing behind regional champ Shawnee Heights at 141 points and Seaman at 127 points during the meet Feb. 12 at Topeka Seaman High School.

Bonner Springs advanced six wrestlers from the Class 6-5A regional at Seaman, including Jenni Knight (120) and Olivia Stean (170) winning individual regional titles. Knight picked up two pinfall victories and a 10-2 major decision. Stean picked up two pinfall victories in a total of 37 seconds before getting a forfeit victory in the finals.


Emmalee Foya (126) and Tyler Wild (235) both took runner-up in their weight classes. Foya earned two pinfall victories before Rylee Murray of Seaman pinned Foya in the finals. Wild had to face Cadence Christenson of Basehor-Linwood twice and suffered first-period pinfall losses in both matches. Kylie Enriquez (109) and Chloie Knapp (155) earned third-place finishes.

Harmon's Kamahni Jackson won the 132-pound division. Jackson picked up two second-period pinfall victories before she toppled Koti Best of  Seaman with a first-period pinfall.

Free State's Madyson Gray won the 138-pound weight classes by earning three pinfall victories. Gray stays undefeated this season and on the path to her fourth state championship, which includes one that precedes her winning during each of the first two official years of girls wrestling in Kansas.

BALDWIN GIRLS WRESTLING REGIONAL

Baldwin took third at its home Class 4-1A regional with 89 points, landing behind regional champ Holton at 125 and Santa Fe Trail at 107. 

Baldwin had five wrestlers advance to state with third-place finishes from Brianna Mitchell (109), Allee Darnell (120), Elee Pittman (191) and Madi Hargett (235). Kaitlin Base (170) took fourth place.

Tonganoxie's Taylor Lux took first place in the 109-pound division, picking up two first-period pinfalls before needing just short of two periods to earn a pinfall over Karley Holmes of Silver Lake in the final. Her teammate Grace Stean finished in second place of the 170-pound division, advancing to the finals with a pinfall victory before getting pinned herself by Hannah Simmers of Atchison County Community.


SUNFLOWER LEAGUE BOYS WRESTLING

Lawrence Free State boys won the Sunflower League title on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Olathe North High School. The Firebirds scored 211 points, beating out runner-up Gardner-Edgerton at 193 and third place Olathe Northwest at 166.

Grayson Hagen (106) and Nolan Bradley (113) won individual league titles. Hagen picked up a pinfall victory to advance to his final where he earned a 6-5 decision over Gabe Sherrell of Olathe Northwest. Bradley earned two pinfall wins before earning a 15-0 tech fall in the final against Robert Hickman of Mill Valley. 

Eric Streeter (132), Zach Shepley (160), Matthew Marcum (195) and Tai Newhouse (285) all finished as runner-ups in their weight classes. Brian Lane (220) picked up a team-high three pinfall victories, but in the semifinals Olathe Northwest's Lucas Conover pinned Lane, forcing him to settle for third place.

Lawrence's Jack Elsten (120), Olathe North's Cael Alderman (126), Mill Valley's Eddie Hughart (132), Olathe Northwest (138), Shawnee Mission East's Jahir Contreras (145), Olathe North's Alec Samuelson (152), Olathe East's Nick Carlson, Gardner-Edgerton's Ty Hammers (170), Mill Valley's Payton Douglas (182), Olathe South's Blake Jouret (195) and Conover (220) also won individual league titles.

FRONTIER LEAGUE BOYS WRESTLING

Tonganoxie boys won the Frontier League title, scoring 197 points to edge out runner-up Paola at 176. Bonner Springs finished third with 161.5 points. 

Braeden Moore (126), Noah Bailey (132), Grayson Sonntag (138) and Colton Brusven (160), Tyler Pankey (170) and Hunter Benedict (220) won individual league titles for Tonganoxie.

Paola's Kaiden Powell (106) and Xander Meinig (113), Bonner Springs' Ethan Cook (120), Shane Daniels (152) and Tony Caballero (285), Ottawa's Parker Guge (145), Baldwin's Jack Harvey (182) and Spring Hill's Draven Pipkin (195) also won individual league titles.

THREE RIVERS LEAGUE BOYS WRESTLING DUALS

Jayhawk-Linn boys won the Three Rivers League by winning all five rounds of duals. Jayhawk-Linn finished off the title run by beating runner-up West Elk in the final round, winning 42-28 over a team that also entered the round undefeated at the tournament.

Jayhawk-Linn picked up pinfall wins from Bowen Wade (126), Andres Flores (170), and Hunter Holt (195) in the final round while Creyo Koop (145) and Bryson Coble (285) earned pinfall wins for West Elk. Boedy Murphy also earned a 15-6 major decision for West Elk.

Koop finished the tournament with the most pins in the least time, securing three pinfalls in 1:07. Jayhawk-Linn's Garrett Seely and Tayler Brown of Flinthills also secured three pinfall wins.

Wade, Seely, White and Flores tied for the tournament best 30 team points earned for Jayhawk-Linn. Uniontown's Kane Shepard, Bryce Eck and Colby Hueston also tied that mark, joining Brown, Koop, Coble and Aiden Welch of Central Heights.

SEK LEAGUE BOYS AND GIRLS WRESTLING

Chanute finished the regular season with league titles for both the boys and girls teams.

Chanute girls won a SEK League title before rolling into regionals for their third-place finish. The Comets scored 100 points nearly doubling the 54 points from runner-up Pittsburg during the tournament at Fort Scott. Independence finished third with 50 points.

Kadynce Axelson (115), Reese Clements (120), Grace Thompson (132), Brinly Bancroft (155), Lena Aguilar (170) and Kamri Naff (191) earned individual league titles as well. Aguilar earned a tournament best three pinfall victories while Axelson, Clements, Bancroft and Abby Stephenson (138) all finished with two pinfalls each.

Independence's Riley Salisbury (101), Coffeyville's Emma Hall (109), Pittsburg's Sierra Deierling (126), Fort Scott's Makaylae Rusk (138), Pittsburg's Maddie Burdick (143) and Independence's Cami Lewis (235) also won league titles.

Chanute boys took first place in the SEK League as well. The Comets took down Coffeyville 72-12 and Fort Scott 70-6 to advance to a championship dual against Independence. Chanute earned a 54-21 win to clinch the league title on Feb. 10 at Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville.

Ty Leedy (145), Kedric Emiling (152), Cade Small (160), Ty Galemore (170), and Tuker Davis (220) each tied for a team-high three pinfall victories. Along with that group, Kolton Misener (113), Dagen Dean (195) and Jakob Aguilar picked up pinfall victories during the final dual against Independence. Trey Dillow (132) earned a 6-2 decision over Kohen Wright and Braxton Harding (138) squeezed out a 1-0 decision over Saxton Renfro to close out the league title.
