Blue Valley Southwest senior Crew Alvarez, whose hat trick in the Class 5A championship match led the Timberwolves to a 7-0 victory over Maize South and their fifth state title in eight years, was part of the Kansas High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State teams.
Alvarez, a Drake signee who finished with 89 career goals, led Southwest’s near-sweep of the Class 5A individual honors. He was selected as the 5A forward of the year, while classmates Jarrett Pechar earned defender of the year and Zach Setterberg was chosen goalkeeper of the year. Eric Jones, who guided Southwest to a 21-0 record, received the 5A coach of the year honor.
St. Thomas Aquinas senior Joseph Befort rounded out the 5A annual honors as midfielder of the year.
Class 6A champion Shawnee Mission East landed six all-state player selections, including 6A midfielder of the year George Hartman and goalkeeper of the year Lukas Lowry, both seniors. Coach Jamie Kelly, who directed the Lancers to the program’s first state title with a 1-0 victory over previously unbeaten Dodge City in the final, was selected 6A’s coach of the year.
A pair of seniors, Shawnee Mission West forward Sergio Hernandez and Olathe East defender Duncan Black, earned 6A individual honors at their respective positions.
In Class 4-1A, Wichita Trinity senior Cooper Mathews was recognized as midfielder of the year after helping the Knights defeat Rose Hill for their third state title and first since 2010. Trinity coach Andy Hackett, who added the boys head coaching duties this fall after directing the Knights’ girls programs for two seasons, was voted 4-1A coach of the year.
The remainder of the 4-1A individual honors were divided among two teams. State runner-up Rose Hill had the defender of the year in senior Cooper Bates and goalkeeper of the year in Gus Arambula-Cornejo, while Baldwin junior Cooper Carr earned forward of the year.
The All-State teams were selected by KHSSCA-member schools.
