Seven drives, seven touchdowns.
Of all the numbers that stood out to Andover quarterback Will Quinn – besides the 48-21 final score – in the Trojans’ victory last Thursday over previously unbeaten Salina Central, it was those that highlighted his team’s offensive efficiency.
“We knew this game was going to be a dog fight,” said Quinn, who ran for four touchdowns and passed for two. “And we came out and executed perfectly.”
With a share of the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail II title on the line, Andover blended its methodical running attack with the occasional air assault to answer every Salina Central challenge and then some. Quinn and fellow junior Pete Vega each ran for 103 yards, with Vega punctuating the Trojans’ final drive with a 2-yard touchdown run as Andover posted a season-high point total.
Quinn added 3-of-3 passing for 122 yards with a 36-yard touchdown to senior Ben Reynolds and a 53-yard TD to senior Barrett Hill.
“They did a nice job defensively of shutting us down a few times,” Andover coach Jamie Cruce said. “They forced us into some passing situations, and luckily we were able to protect enough. That’s always a concern if you’re not throwing the ball a bunch – is your protection going to hold up?
“It did and so we’re proud of the guys.”
Andover's Pete Vega (10) ran for 103 yards in the Trojans' 48-21 victory over Salina Central.
Andover appears to have found its groove after an 0-2 start and will take a five-game winning streak into its regular-season finale at rival Andover Central. A victory would give the Trojans their first outright league title in 12 years.
The Trojans’ losses came to Class 4A No. 1 Kapaun Mt. Carmel – a 27-14 decision – in their season opener and a 27-0 loss at Maize, which is Class 6A’s lone unbeaten and top-ranked team.
“It didn’t feel like we were desperate for anything,” said Cruce, who is in his second season at Andover after previous head coaching stints at Bethany College, Pratt and Campus. “We knew we left a lot of opportunities on the field in those games.
“We knew those teams were going to be pretty good and that’s what we told the guys. We went back to work and worked on everything. They didn’t lose sight of the little things.”
Andover outlasted Goddard 19-16 in overtime in the third week of the season and hasn’t slowed down. In the victory at Salina Central, the Trojans built a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, silencing an offense that entered the game averaging 42.7 points.
“We knew this game meant a lot for league,” Quinn said. “We knew we had to get it and came out with energy, put the first points on the board.
“After halftime, we knew we had to keep it going. We knew they were going to come back and punch us in the mouth. After they did, we finished. We took care of them.”
The halftime break fell in the middle of a sequence in which both teams scrambled for momentum. Andover seemed to have it entering the locker room, as Quinn scored his third touchdown on a 1-yard, fourth-down sneak with 19 seconds remaining after Salina Central was called for pass interference on a play that started with an errant snap on a field goal. That gave the Trojans a 21-7 lead.
Andover was also set to receive the second-half kickoff, but the Mustangs’ Abram Owings covered an onside kick near midfield. Owings then reeled in a 33-yard pass from quarterback Griffin Hall just over three minutes into the third to cut the Trojans’ lead to 21-14.
With Central’s home crowd into the game, Andover answered. The Trojans recovered another onside attempt and four plays later, Quinn hit Reynolds behind the Mustang secondary to restore Andover’s two-score lead.
The Trojans countered a second Central touchdown in the third quarter with an 8-play, 66-yard march. Quinn’s longest run of the game, a 47-yard dash, set up his 1-yard sneak that made it 35-21.
“That’s when you can tell the heartbeat of your team – when there’s some adversity,” Cruce said. “We’ve had some good wins the last few weeks, but we’ve a few times in the games where it’s close and we’ve had to buckle down and make a play. That experience helped us.”
The Trojans expect a similar challenge from Andover Central, which improved to 4-3 last week with a 55-52 victory over Eisenhower. Andover hasn’t beaten the reigning Class 4A champion since 2017. Three Jaguar victories in their seven-game winning streak against Andover have come by seven points or less.
“It’s a rivalry game,” Quinn said. “We can’t take our foot off the pedal. We’ve got to go get another one.”
