SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS WEEK 6 PICK SIX
MAIZE SOUTH (4-1) AT MAIZE (5-0)
After capitalizing on a tumultuous Week 4 in Class 6A to rise to the top of the KSHSAA Covered rankings, Maize remains the classification’s lone unbeaten team heading into a rivalry matchup with Maize South.
The Eagles have won 10 of their last 11 games dating back to last season, a time frame marked by the move of senior Brayden Myovela to starting quarterback. This season, Myovela has completed over 70% of his passes (55 of 78) for 730 yards, 10 touchdowns and no interceptions. He also leads Maize with 51 carries for 509 yards and 8 TDs.
Myovela’s counterpart, Maize South junior Reign Illian, has passed for 1,384 yards with 15 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Illian delivered his best performance of the season last week in a 56-21 victory over Arkansas City, completing 21 of 27 passes for 371 yards and 6 touchdowns. He added a team-high 65 rushing yards and a pair of scores.
Myovela accounted for 283 total yards and 4 touchdowns in Maize’s 55-30 victory over Maize South a year ago. It was the Eagles’ seventh victory in 10 meetings with the Mavs, and avenged a 47-0 loss to Maize South in 2023 at Wichita’s Equity Bank Park.
ANDOVER CENTRAL (3-2) AT SALINA CENTRAL (5-0)
One of six remaining unbeaten teams in Class 5A, Salina Central has handled its business against three winless opponents and a pair of 1-4 teams. The Mustangs conclude the regular season against a trio of teams that enter Week 6 with 3-2 records.
Like many recent Salina Central teams, this year’s version has been tough to stop. The Mustangs average 46.6 points and 507 yards of total offense. Senior Cooper Reves surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the season in last week’s 42-0 victory over Newton, running for 213 yards on 22 carries. Reves’ 10 rushing touchdowns in five games complement junior quarterback Griffin Hall, who has completed 69 of 92 passes for 972 yards and 14 TDs.
Andover Central saw a three-game winning streak end last week with a 31-23 loss to recent nemesis Goddard. The reigning 4A champion has gotten good production from junior running back Jaxson Green (887 yards, 8 touchdowns). Senior Max Olson passed for a season-high 179 yards and two touchdowns against Goddard, completing 12 of 32 attempts.
Salina Central shares the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail II lead with Andover at 3-0, while Andover Central is 2-1. Salina Central leads the brief series 6-3, but Andover Central won last year’s meeting 31-7, launching the Jaguars on an eight-game winning streak to their first state title.
MCPHERSON (4-1) AT MULVANE (4-1)
McPherson and Mulvane bring four-game winning streaks into their Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail III matchup, though both took different paths to get there last week.
McPherson, No. 4 in Class 4A, overcame a 21-point, second-quarter deficit to edge Rose Hill 37-35. The Bullpups caught Rose Hill in the third quarter and took a 31-28 lead with 2:48 to play, but needed sophomore Brody Milleson’s short touchdown run to win it after the Rockets regained the lead on a 69-yard screen pass.
Meanwhile, Mulvane scored all of its points in the first half of a 52-0 victory over winless El Dorado. The Wildcats average 352.6 rushing yards. Senior quarterback Manny Myers leads the ground attack with 647 yards and 7 touchdowns, while senior Grady Myers has 638 yards and a team-high 8 touchdowns.
Mulvane snapped a five-game losing skid to the Bullpups last season winning 35-21 on the way to a 7-3 season. Manny Myers ran for 320 yards and a pair of touchdowns in that victory.
WICHITA TRINITY (3-2) AT HESSTON (4-1)
It’ll be a homecoming for Trinity’s first-year head coach Ryan Schadler, an all-state player at Hesston and All-Big 12 kick returner at Kansas. He’ll bring in a Knights team that owns a three-game winning streak.
Last week, Trinity posted its first shutout since the 2015 season opener, blanking Belle Plaine 35-0. Junior quarterback Zac Zimmerman passed for 155 yards and 2 touchdowns, and also ran for a pair of scores. He has accounted for 1,266 yards and 13 TDs this season.
Hesston, 2-0 in Class 3A District 6, also posted a shutout last Friday, defeating Smoky Valley 51-0. Senior Blayne Wilson ran for 155 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Swathers won their third straight since falling to 2A No. 4 Hoisington in Week 2. Wilson has rushed for 699 yards and 10 TDs this season.
Hesston has defeated Trinity each of the last five seasons by and average of 33.6 points. In last year’s 55-14 victory, the Swathers outrushed Trinity 371-62 and intercepted Zimmerman four times.
LITTLE RIVER (5-0) AT ELL-SALINE (4-1)
After squaring off in one of the best regular-season games in any class last season, Little River and Ell-Saline meet again under similar circumstances – both trying to keep their share of the Eight-Player I District 3 lead.
Little River, No. 2 in Eight-Player I, will look to avenge a 38-36 loss that boosted Ell-Saline to last season’s district title. The Redskins have rolled to this point, averaging 60.4 points while posting three shutouts. Senior Jaxson Konen and junior Jaren Garrison have fueled an offense that has generated 37 touchdowns, combining to complete 80% of their passes for 592 yards and 9 TDs. Junior Logan Schubert has rushed for 287 yards and 7 TDs.
Ell-Saline, winner of four straight since a season-opening loss to Eight-Player II No. 3 Hanover, is led by the experienced tandem of Reese Krone and Kas Kramer. Krone, in his second season at quarterback, has passed for 533 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Kramer leads the Cardinals in rushing with 450 yards and 8 scores.
Kramer played a key role in Ell-Saline’s victory last season, scoring on runs of 68 and 62 yards. He ran for 142 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and caught one of Krone’s three scoring passes last week in a 50-0 victory over Solomon.
HUTCHINSON CENTRAL CHRISTIAN (5-0) AT ARGONIA-ATTICA (4-1)
The closest of Central Christian’s nine victories last season on the way to the Eight-Player II quarterfinals was a 28-12 victory over Argonia-Attica. The District 5 lead will be the prize for Friday’s winner.
Central Christian, No. 5 in Eight-Player II, has not been tested to this point. The Cougars avenged a 2024 loss to Sunrise Christian in their opener, and have since surrendered just eight points in the last four games with three consecutive shutouts. Senior Piercen Huff ran for 167 yards and 4 touchdowns in last week’s 46-0 victory over St. Paul. Huff and classmate Konnor Sullivan each have 14 rushing scores this season.
Senior Carson Vineyard has been a workhorse again this season for Argonia-Attica, which is a two-point overtime loss to Central-Burden shy of being unbeaten. Vineyard has rushed for 553 yards and 15 touchdowns, and caught 13 passes for 235 yards and 5 TDs. He also leads the Titans with 62 tackles.
Last year’s meeting was a one-score game entering the fourth quarter. Huff boosted Central Christian with a receiving touchdown and two interceptions.
