Kole Riedy’s had a number in his mind all season.

1,722.

“I wanted to beat my dad’s record,” Riedy said of the yardage total his father, Brian, rushed for his senior season at Hope in 1992. “It made me want to push even harder my senior season to get that. It’s always good to do better than your dad. He started it off for me so I have to finish it.”

Sitting on the cusp of hitting that total going into Rural Vista’s Eight-Player Division II postseason game with Colony-Crest last Thursday, Riedy was right where he wanted to be. And it didn’t take long for Kole to get the number he desired.

Needing only 100 yards to match Brian’s total, Riedy broke touchdown runs of 51, 41 and 53 yards in the first quarter to blow right past it. Riedy finished the night with 216 yards and four rushing touchdowns, pushing his season total to 1,838 yards and 32 touchdowns.

“He probably always wanted me to beat it because I’m his son,” said Kole, who also returned a punt 73 yards for a score in the win over Crest. “I think he’ll be proud of me, but I really don’t know what he’ll say.”

Brian?

“I knew he had a shot,” said Brian, who led Division II in rushing yards and touchdowns his senior season, just as Kole is doing this year. “It’s always nice to have your kid do better. He’s way better than I was.”

Just as important as topping his father’s rushing record for Riedy is leading Rural Vista to its best season since Hope and White City went into a co-op at the start of the 2014 season. With its 51-0 win over Crest on Thursday, the Heat are 8-1 this season – the most wins for the program, surpassing the seven wins the Heat recorded a year ago.

“Getting out there and getting to 8-1, that’s big,” Riedy said. “Freshman year, we were like 2-7. Then sophomore year we went 5-5 and last year 7-3. We’ve just kept getting better and better.

“Last year gave us a lot of confidence.”

After posting its first .500 record since 2016 in 2023, the Heat improved to 7-3 a year ago to match the most wins in Rural Vista history. The only losses came to teams that were undefeated at the time – Little River, Burlingame and Axtell – with all three losses by 30 points or more.

But the groundwork for this year’s success was laid and with eight seniors back this season, the Heat have built upon that. The lone loss this season was a 70-30 shootout with Little River in a game where the Heat led 16-12 after the first quarter before the Redskins blitzed them with a 24-0 second quarter. After playing even in the third quarter, Little River outscored Rural Vista 26-6 in the final quarter.

But the Heat bounced back strong and has run wild since. A 44-15 win over Burlingame was the closest game in Rural Vista’s current seven-game win streak and clinched the program’s first district title.

“The hardware last week, I told them that’s something that hasn’t been done,” Rural Vista coach Brian Henry said. “They got to leave their legacy and that’s something to be proud of. They got their names on that trophy and now anything after that is icing on the cake.”

With 216 yards against Colony-Crest on Thursday night, Rural Vista's Kole Riedy (middle) surpassed a goal he had this season, surpassing his father, Brian's total from his senior season. Kole has 1,838 yards this season while Brian had 1,722 his senior year.

The monster season Riedy has put together this season has kind of come a bit out of nowhere. After a solid sophomore season where he ran for 819 yards and 10 touchdowns, Riedy served more of a complementary role to senior Logan Tate last year and ran for just 457 yards on 51 carries.

But with Tate and 2024 senior Gavin Carson, who also shared the backfield workload, having graduated, Henry has leaned heavily on Riedy this season. His 158 carries are triple that of any other back. He’s gone over 100 yards and had multiple touchdowns in every game, topping 200 yards on five occasions with a career best of 294 yards and 5 touchdowns in the season opener against Solomon that signaled the season he could have.

“This year he’s getting them all,” Henry said of Rural Vista’s offensive touches. “He’s elusive and pretty prolific.”

Riedy is close to leaving his legacy in more than just family circles. His 1,838 yards puts him within 124 yards of the Hope/Rural Vista program record of 1,962 rushing yards in a season, set by Jacob Krause in 2003. Krause also ran for 40 touchdowns that season.

Riedy will face his toughest test in trying to get that record as Rural Vista takes on Axtell in Friday’s playoff game. The Eagles are 8-1 as well this season, having their 58-game win streak snapped earlier this season by Hanover, and are the four-time reigning Division II state champions.

“We’ll have a good week of practice and try to be prepared for them,” Riedy said. “I’m looking forward to see how our team goes up against. Hopefully we’ll have our blocking schemes down and our defense can play a heck of a game.”
