CLASS 3-2-1A GIRLS TENNIS PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2025
Collegiate's Amelia Blackman
AMELIA BLACKMAN, WICHITA COLLEGIATE
Blackman is the most accomplished and experienced player for the Spartans, who will set out to extend their state-title winning streak to 17 consecutive years with several new faces in their lineup. Now a senior, Blackman posted a 22-12 record and fourth-place finish in Class 3-2-1A singles last fall after finishing fifth at state as a sophomore. Last season, she won the Conway Springs regional and entered state as the No. 2 seed before falling to Kansas City Christian’s Lauren Seitz in the semifinals. As a sophomore, Blackman won four state matches after occupying Collegiate’s No. 2 singles spot behind state champion Lara de Carvalho.
Sterling's Chelsie Brown
CHELSIE BROWN, STERLING
Brown, a senior, was one of two undefeated girls singles champions in Kansas last season, joining Class 4A winner Ainzley Zulueta of Hayden by winning her first 3-2-1A crown. Brown, who is hard of hearing, completed a 36-0 season with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Kansas City Christian’s Lauren Seitz. It continued an impressive career trajectory for Brown, who was 16-5 and a state qualifier as a freshman, followed by a 35-9 mark and seventh-place finish in 3-2-1A as a sophomore. Brown is one of two returning state qualifiers for Sterling along with Jaiden Jaeger.
Ellsworth's Inarie Rippert
Ellsworth's Reygan Coonrod
REYGAN COONROD AND INARIE RIPPERT, ELLSWORTH
Coonrod and Rippert have been a dynamic duo since they first partnered together when Coonrod arrived as a freshman in 2023. They won five tournaments throughout that season and then after taking second at regionals made a run all the way to the state championship match before falling to Wichita Collegiate’s Laney Conrad and Julia Herrman in the finals to finish 28-5. Last year, Coonrod and Rippert lost just once during the regular season, winning nine meet titles including regionals. Taking a 34-1 mark into the state tournament, Coonrod and Rippert were anything but surprise finalists as they worked their way back to a rematch with Conrad and Herrman for the 3-2-1A doubles title. They couldn’t knock off the Spartan duo, taking second for the second straight year and helping Ellsworth to a runner-up team finish – the highest state showing in program history. With the graduation of Conrad and Herrman, Coonrod and Rippert will be the favorites for the 3-2-1A title this fall. Rippert is now a three-time state medalist, also placing 10th as a freshman in 2022 with doubles partner Callie Sheridan.
Ellsworth's Felis De La Cruz
FELIS DE LA CRUZ, ELLSWORTH
A singles Class 3-2-1A state qualifier in 2022 and 2023, De La Cruz moved to doubles last year and returned to state with partner Elena Jundt. The duo won No. 2 doubles titles at seven tournaments throughout the season and took third at regionals to take a 29-7 record into the state tournament and earn the No. 7 seed in the doubles draw. They won their opening match before having to face Bearcat teammates Reygan Coonrod and Inarie Rippert in the quarterfinals where they lost 6-2, 6-0. They lost their next two matches but finished with a win to place 11th and cap a 31-11 season. They helped Ellsworth to a runner-up finish as a team, the highest state finish for the Bearcat program ever. With Jundt graduating, De La Cruz will be looking for a new partner this season and could possibly return to singles.
Wichita Classical's Ani Doom
ANI DOOM, WICHITA CLASSICAL
Doom, a senior, qualified for state in singles last season along with teammate Greer Kice, who graduated after finishing seventh. Doom’s Class 3-2-1A tournament ended shy of a medal after she dropped a three-set opening match to Phillipsburg’s Valorie Solida. Still, she posted a 17-9 record that included a third-place finish in the Conway Springs regional. Now in her fourth year as a varsity player, she and classmate Nora Neumann give Classical valuable experience.
Meade's Bethany Reimer, left, and Aby Dyck
ABY DYCK AND BETHANY REIMER, MEADE
Dyck and Reimer reached the Class 3-2-1A state tournament in doubles as juniors last year. Dyck and Reimer finished 21-5 on the season. They have both played varsity since their freshman seasons, with Reimer playing primarily doubles while Dyck has played two years of doubles and one in singles. Dyck and Reimer are part of a five-player senior class for the Buffaloes.
Marysville's Katherine Frese
KATHERINE FRESE, MARYSVILLE
A doubles state qualifier with Aubree Vering as a sophomore in 2023, Frese switched to singles last year as Marysville coach Lana Pekarek shook up the Bulldog lineup last year and paired Vering with fellow senior Grace Winkler. Frese formed a solid 1-2 singles punch with classmate Ava Spicer, who returned last year after qualifying for state in singles as a freshman. Frese placed third at regionals and then opened state with two straight wins, knocking off No. 8 seed Madilyn Poole of Cair Paravel in a marathon 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 second-round match. After falling in the quarterfinals to eventual state champion Chelsie Brown of Sterling, Frese went 1-2 in the consolation bracket to finish eighth and end the season with a 25-12 record. She and Spicer both return this year, but one or both could move to doubles this year with only one returner back from Marysville’s two state-qualifying doubles teams.
Hesston's Elyse Griffin
ELYSE GRIFFIN, HESSTON
Griffin has proven to be adaptable for the Swathers throughout her career. Primarily a singles player as a freshman, Griffin joined veteran doubles player Kori Kramer as a sophomore and finished fourth in Class 3-2-1A with a 25-6 record. After Kramer graduated, Griffin teamed with Molly Martin last season to post a 22-7 mark and third-place state finish, matching their showing at regionals. Griffin, who also went 5-0 in singles a year ago, will likely continue in doubles as a senior, but will do so with a new partner after Martin graduated. She has a combined 67-20 career record in singles and doubles.
Ellsworth's Karli Haase
KARLI HAASE, ELLSWORTH
Haase stepped in as a freshman in 2023 and immediately took over as Ellsworth’s No. 1 singles player, though she did play some doubles, going undefeated with Hannah Vague and finishing with a 19-9 singles record, placing 10th at state. She and Vague played singles exclusively last year and Haase was nearly unbeatable throughout the season, capturing titles at eight meets including regionals. Her 34-2 record earned her the No. 4 seed in the singles draw at state and she reached the quarterfinals before losing 6-4, 6-2 to St. John’s Camila Rojas. That was her only loss at state as she rebounded in the consolation bracket to win three straight and finish fifth, taking an 8-0 win over Kingman’s Ryan Schreiner in the fifth-place match to cap a 38-3 season. Haase helped Ellsworth to a runner-up team finish, the best in program history and will be the Bearcats’ No. 1 singles player again this year as a junior.
Wichita Trinity's Joley Henderson
JOLEY HENDERSON, WICHITA TRINITY
Henderson, a senior, and her now-graduated doubles partner Madeline Davis claimed the final qualifying spot at last year’s Conway Springs regional, then parlayed it into a ninth-place finish at the Class 3-2-1A tournament. The Knights duo completed a 19-16 season with an 8-2 victory over Marysville’s Grace Turner and Micaiah Urban. Henderson, who began playing for the Knights as a sophomore, and Davis also qualified for the Class 4A state tournament two years ago, posting a 2-2 record at state to finish 11-15.
Sterling's Jaiden Jaeger
JAIDEN JAEGER, STERLING
Jaeger enters her senior season in search of a new doubles partner after winning the Ashland regional and qualifying for state last season with now-graduated Emily Wellman. Jaeger and Wellman went 20-8 and Jaeger, who played one tournament with Danika Zimmerman, finished 23-9 overall in doubles last fall. Jaeger had a hand in four doubles tournament victories – three with Wellman – during the 2024 campaign. Jaeger has a 48-13 career doubles mark.
Conway Springs' Sadie Koester
Conway Springs' Morgan Koester
MORGAN AND SADIE KOESTER, CONWAY SPRINGS
The Koester cousins begin their third and final season as doubles partners looking to clear the state semifinal hurdle and play for a championship. After finishing third in Class 3-2-1A as sophomores, the Cardinal duo took fourth a year ago. Both of their title bids were derailed by now-graduated Wichita Collegiate standouts Laney Conrad and Julia Herrman. The Koesters’ 22-9 record last year also included a regional runner-up finish to Conrad and Herrman. Morgan, a state qualifier in singles as a freshman, enters her final campaign with a 68-33 career record. Sadie, who reached state in doubles with Grace Bender as a freshman, has a 67-35 career mark.
Osborne's Claire Mick
Osborne's Gentrie Riner
CLAIRE MICK AND GENTRIE RINER, OSBORNE
Mick and Riner formed a formidable doubles team as underclassmen last season. They reached the Class 3-2-1A tournament and won two matches at state. Mick and Riner opened with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Meade’s Aby Dyck and Bethany Reimer. They lost their next match to Central Plains’ Grace Lamatsch and Ryann Metro in a third-set tiebreaker before bouncing back with an 8-3 win over Smoky Valley’s Jillian Hett/Madelyn Mauk and then exiting the tournament with an 8-3 loss to Wichita Trinity’s Madeline Davis and Joley Henderson. Mick and Riner finished 26-8 on the season. Mick is entering her junior season while Riner is a sophomore.
Wichita Classical's Nora Neumann
NORA NEUMANN, WICHITA CLASSICAL
Neumann, a two-time state medalist, will embark on a new journey in her senior season. She finished sixth in Class 3-2-1A doubles last season with now-graduated Adah Branam. The Saints duo sandwiched four consolation bracket victories between a pair of losses to Wichita Collegiate’s Tatum Downing and Langley Overman and finished the season 31-13. In 2023, Neumann and Branam finished 10
th in 3-2-1A, winning three consolation matches after a round of 16 loss to Conway Springs’ Morgan and Sadie Koester.
Cair Paravel's Madilyn Poole
MADILYN POOLE, CAIR PARAVEL
Poole made history last year, becoming Cair Paravel’s first-ever girls state tennis qualifier when she placed runner-up at her Class 3-2-1A regional last year in singles, falling in the regional finals to Kansas City Christian senior Lauren Seitz. That earned her the No. 8 seed but Poole tumbled in her first match to Marysville’s Katherine Frese in a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 second-round loss. She bounced back with a win in her first consolation match before seeing her state tourney end with an injury default in her next match. Poole finished her sophomore season with a 20-8 record and will look to become the Lions’ first-ever state placer this fall.
Greeley County's Mia Reynolds
MIA REYNOLDS, GREELEY COUNTY
Reynolds is entering her third year as a varsity stater after picking up tennis as a freshman. Reynolds and doubles partner Annabelle Schneider turned in a solid state tournament a year ago, earning a 12th-place medal. Reynolds and Schneider dropped their opening match to Wichita Trinity’s Madeline Davis and Joley Henderson but won their next two matches against Cimarron’s Roselyn Garcia/Crimson Sonday and Ellinwood’s Grace Sturtz/Mahra Johnston. The Jackrabbits would later fall to Ellsworth’s Felis De La Cruz/Elena Jundt in the 11th-place match. After the graduation of Schneider, Reynolds, a junior, is expected to play both doubles and singles this year. “It would be great to find myself back at the state tournament, competing against the top athletes in the state,
” Reynolds said.
Larned's Lauren Sleder
LAUREN SLEDER, LARNED
Sleder joined Buhler’s Sofia Spies as the lone freshmen state singles qualifiers in all classes last season after finishing third at the WaKeeney regional. Despite going 0-2 at state to finish 25-10, Sleder gave Larned a solid singles combination along with current senior Cassie Manry. Playing a mix of No. 1 and No. 2 singles for the Indians, Sleder won her flight at four tournaments, including the Central Kansas League meet.
Marysville's Ava Spicer
AVA SPICER, MARYSVILLE
After qualifying for the Class 3-2-1A state meet in singles as a freshman in 2022, Spicer missed out on her sophomore season. She came back strong last year as a junior and not only returned to state in singles, but this time came away with a state medal after going 0-2 at state as a freshman. Spicer took just fifth at her regional, but won her first state match and then after losing to Ellsworth’s Karli Haase in the second round, won two straight consolation matches to clinch a state medal. After taking a loss in the consolation quarterfinals, Spicer won her last two matches to earn a ninth-place finish. She finished with a 30-8 overall record and is one of two returning singles state placers for the Bulldogs this season along with eighth-place finisher Katherine Frese. Spicer is coming off a knee injury suffered during last basketball season and her health will dictate whether she stays at singles or slides into a doubles position.
Marysville's Macaiah Urban
MACAIAH URBAN, MARYSVILLE
Marysville qualified both of its doubles teams for the Class 3-2-1A state tournament a year ago with Urban teaming with Grace Turner. In their first season playing together on varsity, Urban and Turner finished runner-up at regionals to teammates Aubree Vering and Grace Winkler. Both teams ended up meeting again at state with Urban and Turner falling to Vering and Winkler in the second round. They bounced back to win two straight consolation matches to clinch a state medal and wound up placing 10th while Vering and Winkler ended up placing eighth. Urban is the lone returner from those doubles teams and will be looking for a new partner as Marysville fills holes there to complement returning state singles placers Katherine Frese and Ava Spicer.
Ellsworth's Hannah Vague
HANNAH VAGUE, ELLSWORTH
A state qualifier in doubles with Elena Jundt in 2023, placing 11th, Vague switched spots with singles state qualifier Felis De La Cruz. She made the move to singles while De La Cruz paired with Jundt in doubles last fall, each returning to state in their new setting. Vague held down the No. 2 singles spot behind Karli Haase and she won titles at six meets before taking fifth at regionals. Vague won her first match at state before falling in the second round. After picking up two consolation bracket wins, she had to face teammate Haase in the consolation quarterfinals and fell 8-3. She won her next match and ended up taking 10th, finishing the season with a 35-10 overall record and helping Ellsworth to a program-best runner-up state finish as a team. With De La Cruz looking for a new doubles partner this season, Vague could return to that setting this year or stay as a singles player as the Bearcats look to capture the team title this fall.
