OVERLAND PARK — If Friday night was any indication, the Class 6A state girls wrestling tournament is headed for a finish worthy of the stage.
Defending champion Garden City and surging Gardner-Edgerton traded blows throughout the semifinal round at AdventHealth Sports Park and will enter Saturday separated by just three points in the team standings. Garden City sits atop the leaderboard with 168.5 points, while the Trailblazers are right behind at 165.5, setting up a dramatic final day.
Both programs advanced five wrestlers to Saturday night’s championship finals — and fittingly, they’ll meet head-to-head in one of them.
At 100 pounds, Gardner-Edgerton’s Madalyn Riedinger (39-3) will square off with Garden City’s Nicole Abrego (35-8) after both turned in strong semifinal performances. Riedinger earned a 10-4 decision over Manhattan’s Eva Lucios, while Abrego needed just 23 seconds to pin Mill Valley’s Finley Rose.
The title race hardly ends there.
Garden City also advanced Emjay Marez (105), Crystal Loera (115), Marina Loera (125) and Kylie Huber (135) into the finals. Gardner-Edgerton countered with Brielynn Jackson (110), Aspen Walker (120), Josie Clouse (130) and Jadyn Clouse (155) joining Riedinger under the spotlight.
And both teams still have plenty of firepower on the backside of the bracket. The Trailblazers have seven wrestlers alive in consolation matches, while the Buffaloes have six — meaning bonus points Saturday morning could ultimately decide the championship.
Friday’s semifinals delivered statement performances and a few bracket-shaking upsets.
Gardner-Edgerton freshman Aspen Walker provided perhaps the biggest jolt of the night at 120 pounds. Walker (47-4) pinned defending state champion Reese Anderson of Wichita North in 2:45, ending Anderson’s title defense and sending the freshman to the finals against unbeaten Presley Beard of Derby (31-0).
Nicole Abrego earns a quick pins in the semifinals at 100 pounds Friday and is one of five Garden City wrestlers to reach the finals.
At 115, Garden City’s Crystal Loera — a returning champion from 125 a year ago — rolled to a 16-1 technical fall over Shawnee Mission Northwest’s Calla Hardison. Awaiting her is Junction City star Bree Villanueva, who remained unbeaten at 35-0 by pinning Gardner-Edgerton’s Sage Peterson in 1:37. Villanueva is chasing her third career state title and will attempt to keep her perfect season intact Saturday night.
Villanueva is one of five finalists looking to complete undefeated campaigns.
Manhattan’s Sophia Horne (37-0) reached the 140-pound final with a semifinal pin and will face Maize’s Scarlett Yeager (45-2). At 145, Olathe East’s Audrey Lennard improved to 43-0 with a pin of Garden City’s Aria Cordes and will meet Washburn Rural’s Emme Blanco.
Derby’s Presley Beard (120) and Campus’ Elayna Evans (190) also carry unblemished records into championship Saturday. Evans (34-0) advanced with a 46-second pin and will face Liberal’s Aileen Figueroa.
Returning champions continued to assert themselves across the bracket.
Junction City's Bree Villanueva earns a pin in the semifinals and will go for her third state tile Saturday in the 6A finals.
Shawnee Mission South’s Stella Segura (110) pinned Maize’s Alayah Losey in 2:21 and will meet Gardner-Edgerton’s Brielynn Jackson in a marquee final. Segura won at 115 last season. Teammate Lulu Kirk, last year’s 235-pound champion, moved back into the finals with a 4:57 pin and will face Olathe North’s Molly Marty.
Dodge City’s Elizabeth Ramirez, last year’s 105-pound champion, cruised into another final with a 17-1 technical fall and will meet Garden City’s Marez.
Manhattan’s Alayna Slifer (135) and Olathe East’s Lennard (145) also return to the championship mat seeking to repeat, while Junction City’s Villanueva aims to add another chapter to her decorated career.
Behind the top two teams, Washburn Rural (112 points) sits third, followed by Manhattan (97) and Shawnee Mission South (91).
Wrestling resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday and in the finals, the girls will start at 155 pounds.
