Santa Fe Trail builds momentum with dominant sweep of Pioneer League titles | North Central Kansas track and field standouts

Santa Fe Trail gained some serious momentum for the track and field postseason with a dominant showing at the Pioneer League meet.
 
The Chargers swept the team titles at the meet with the boys winning by 60 points over Wellsville and the girls winning by 50 points, also over Wellsville. In rolling to the titles, the Chargers picked up victories in 19 of the 36 events at the meet with the boys’ team coming away with 11 wins and the girls eight.
 
Four Charger boys finished with three event wins each, all four winning two individual events in their triple-crown showing.
 
Bryce Roberts set a pair of league records in winning the 1,600 and 3,200. He ran a 4:34.05 to break the league mark in the 1,600 and a 9:57.74 to set the league record in the 3,200. He also was on the winning 3,200 relay.
 
Kain Tantaros broke the league record in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 0.5 inches. Tantaros also led a 1-2-3 Charger finish in the 200 with Stephen Johnson second and Trevir Hinck third. Hinck picked up a win in the 400 and led a 1-2-3 Trail finish in the pole vault, going 13-0 for the win.
 
Hinck and Tantaros also were on the winning 400 relay along with Julion Daniels, who swept the league titles in the shot put (52-11.5) and discus (141-7). Daniels also took second in the 100. Johnson also was on the winning 400 relay and added a title in the long jump.
 
 
Alexa Heder was the lone girls triple winner, taking titles in the 800 and 3,200 and as part of the 3,200 relay. She led a 1-2 Trail finish in the 800 with Eva Branstetter and in the 3,200 with Lea Roberts, who added a victory in the 1,600. 
 
Paige Kibbee set a school record in the triple jump with a 34-5 to beat the old mark of 34-2.5 set in 2010 by Shelly Coffman, finishing second. The Chargers got field wins from Quincy Cook in the high jump, Reese Black in the pole vault, Molly Herren in the discus and Tyler Shreve in the shot put.
 
 
OTHER TRACK AND FIELD STANDOUTS
  • Northern Heights claimed its second straight Lyon County League championship. The 3,200 relay team broke the league meet record with a time of 10:12.48. Ellei McCrory also won the 1,600 title while Tiffany led a 1-2 Wildcat finish in the 400 with Saunders and was second in the 800. Addisen Petersen swept the titles in the pole vault, long jump and triple jump and led a 1-2 finish in the long jump with Avery Patton. Jaitlyn Johnson won the discus and was second in the shot put.
  • Goessel’s Eli Gaeddert broke his own Wheat State League record in the 1,600 with a time of 4:36.04 and also added the 800 league mark with a 2:02.65. Gaeddert now holds league meet records in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Athena Funk broke her own school record in the pole vault with an 8-8 clearance while Delaney Duerksen broke her own league meet record in the 300 hurdles with a 47.59.
  • In sweeping the discus and shot put titles at the North Central Kansas League meet, Rock Creek’s Rory Pitzer broke the school record in the shot put, throwing 41-4 to beat the old mark of 40-3 set by Elizabeth Herrs in 2012. She threw 140 to win the discus title. The Mustangs broke nine school records at the meet as a program and swept the team titles for the first time in school history with the boys winning their first league title since 20`15. Logan Rankin won the 100 and 200 and was on the 1,600 relay that broke their own school record with a 3:25.89. Aubrey McCarn broke the girls’ triple jump record with a 35-11.5.
  • Wellsville’s Ellie Strain won four events at the Pioneer League meet, taking titles in the 100 (12.22), 200 (35.56), 100 hurdles (14.8) and 300 hurdles (44.65). Her 300 hurdles time was a new school record. Alana Green broke the school record in the long jump with a winning mark of 18-7 while Savannah Viets won the triple jump.
  • Seaman’s Brody Anderson broke his own school record in the 800 with a 1:53.34 on his way to a triple crown showing at the United Kansas Conference meet. Anderson also won the 1,600 and 3,200.
  • Manhattan captured its seventh straight Centennial League girls championship, winning by a whopping 118 points. Kayla Cramer broke the school record in the pole vault going 10-0 to top the old record of 9-7 from 2015. Lauren Perry had a hand in three victories, taking first in the 400 and also on the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Gabrielle Converse also was on the winning 1,600 relay and won the 800 and 1,600. Demya Gill won the 100 and was on the winning 400 relay. Manhattan swept the top three places in the high jump led by Sophia Peabody’s win and Joss (discus) and Jorryn Hall (shot put) added titles, as did Michelle Jeje in the 200.
  • Kaelyn Boss swept all three titles in the throwing events at the Flint Hills League meet to lead Osage City’s girls to the team title. Boss won the discus, javelin and shotput, breaking her own school record in the shot with a throw of 41-1.
  • Washington County broke a pair of school records at the Twin Valley League meet as Chayse Gross set a new mark in the long jump with a leap of 21-2, breaking the old record of 21-0.5 set by Cole Thompson in 2017. Tanner Baker set a record in the triple jump with a mark of 44-0, breaking the old record of 42-9 set by Levi Gauby in 2017. Alyssa Jueneman just missed the girls’ school record in the long jump with a 17-2, falling a half-inch short.
  • Marysville’s Reese Wassenberg had a hand in four golds at the North Central Kansas League meet, taking titles in the 200 and 300 hurdles and also running on the Bulldogs’ winning 400 and 1,600 relays.
  • Jefferson West’s Brynlee Koontz was a double Big East League champion as a freshman, taking titles in the 200 and 400.
  • Osawatomie’s foursome of Jasmine Bratton, Avaya O’Brien, Amaya Marta and Dakota Moser swept the Pioneer League titles in the 400 and 1,600 relays. O’Brien and Bratton also finished 1-2 in the 400.
  • Chase County picked up a pair of champions at the Flint Hills League meet with Austin Andersen winning the boys 100 and Dakota Phillips winning the 100 hurdles for the girls.
  • Highland Park’s Jurnee Cole was a triple winner at the Meadowlark Conference meet, taking titles in the 100, 200 and 400. She also was on the third-place 400 relay. Tremaine Savage had a hand in three golds for the boys, winning the 400 and running on the winning 400 and 1,600 relays. Amarius Dew, Jaiden Smith and Jayden Young also ran on the winning relays.
  • St. Marys’ Jolene Wingerter tied the girls’ school record in the 100 in winning the title at the Big East League meet in 12.34. That also broke the league meet record she set a year ago.
  • Silver Lake swept the team titles at the Big East League meet with the boys winning six events and the girls winning four. Joel Miller was a part of four league titles, winning the 200 and 400 and also running on the winning 400 and 1,600 relays. Owen Rottinghaus and Thomas Fisher also ran on both winning relays. Bryson Burgos won the high jump and Myles Fisher won the discus. For the girls, Jaylie Whitehead, Ali Gerber and Kinley Weber were on the winning 400 and 1,600 relays while Rayleigh Alonso won the discus and Kailyn Hanni won the javelin.
  • Nemaha Central’s Mason Schultejans set a new school record in the triple jump in winning the Big East League title in the event with a 44-9. Meg Honeyman broke the school record in the 100 with a 12.36.
