Washburn Rural showed off its doubles depth in capturing team titles at both the Topeka City Championships and Centennial League meet, both held at Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.

At the City Championships last Thursday, the Junior Blues swept the doubles titles as Dylan Willingham and Cale Duetscher cruised to the No. 1 title and Ben Tryhus and Kieffer O’Connor got their second straight No. 2 crown.

Willingham and Deutscher dropped only four games in taking the No. 1 title, beating Topeka West’s Collin McGee and Zander Rice 8-3 in the championship match. Tryhus and O’Connor duplicated that performance, also losing only four games and taking an 8-3 win over Seaman’s Aaron Sampson and Cooper Hopeck.

Their showing helped Rural take the team title by a 30-27 margin over Seaman.

At Monday’s Centennial League meet, there was only one division for singles and doubles and that led to an all-Rural showdown in the doubles finals. And though Willingham and Deutscher have held down the No. 1 spot, it was Tryhus and O’Connor who came out victories in their title showdown, taking a 1-6, 6-1, 10-8 marathon victory.

“Cale and Dylan played really well and it was an honor to be able to play them in the final,” Tryhus said. “It’s always hard playing your teammates and you’ve got to look past that and just play your game.”

The 1-2 doubles finish along with a third in singles from Greyson Jones led Rural to the league team title as they finished three points ahead of Manhattan.

The Indians were led by singles champion Jay Hoke, who beat Topeka High’s Tres Lassiter 6-2, 6-0 in the singles finals.

Cair Paravel's Drew Fay captured the singles title at the Topeka City Meet, beating Topeka's Lassiter 8-3 in the finals. Fay is 22-1 this season.

The runner-up doubles showing by Topeka West’s McGee and Rice at the city meet capped a week that saw the duo go 13-3 and take titles at the Topeka High Invitational and Seaman Quad as well as a sixth at the Goddard Invitational.
