WICHITA – Cohen Museousky has long appreciated golf as a microcosm of life, a sport where unforeseen challenges surface at any moment.
Museousky, a Goddard sophomore, found himself in two such situations during the final round of the Class 5A boys state golf tournament at Tallgrass Golf Club.
After salvaging a bogey earlier in the back nine following an errant tee shot that went out of bounds, Museousky’s tee shot to the par-3 17
th sailed long and rolled beyond a cart path to a similar fate behind a stake marking the course boundary. Instructed to play a second ball from the tee to the 163-yard hole, Museousky regrouped and hit a cut shot to within 10 feet.
The gritty bogey save that followed enabled Museousky to close out a 1-over-par 73 and helped him hold off Eisenhower senior Luke Springer and Blue Valley Southwest junior Beau Sheldon by two shots for 5A medalist honors.

“There’s ups and downs in golf,” said Museousky, whose 36-hole total of 1-over 143 made him Goddard’s first individual state golf champion. “Same as in life and it’s how you battle back and stay positive through it.”
Museousky has no recollection of it, but was diagnosed with leukemia as a toddler. Doctors gave him a 50% chance of survival, but after a series of treatments and hospital stays, the cancer went into remission. Years later, he was pronounced cancer free.
That history served as an underlier for an emotional celebration Wednesday near the ninth green, where Springer’s final shot to catch Museousky sailed long out of a greenside bunker, leading to a bogey that left him in a second-place tie with Sheldon at 145.
Family, teammates and golfers from other teams paraded over to congratulate Museousky, who notched his first victory of the season.
“Everybody gets a hand dealt to them in life and it’s what you do with that,” Museousky said. “Whether it’s good or bad, it’s how you deal with that and persevere to get through it.”
Museousky dictated those terms with a solid closing stretch to his sophomore campaign.
Six weeks after opening the season with a 12-over 84 and 28
th place finish in the Andover Invitational, Museousky hit mid-May on a much different level. He carded a 1-under 69 to tie Andover Central’s Colt Farrow for the low round in the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail II tournament, settling for runner-up after a playoff.
Eisenhower's Luke Springer rolls his par attempt at No. 18 during the Class 5A state boys golf tournament.
A week later, Museousky qualified for state for the second straight year, shooting a 2-under 70 in the regional at Wichita Rolling Hills, where he trailed only Bishop Carroll freshman Kaden Leivian, who fired a sizzling 64.
Museousky was in contention from the start of the two-day tournament, sharing the first-round lead with Springer, a Drake signee, after both shot even-par 71s.
“I felt like I was on fire coming in,” Museousky said. “I really had a rough start at the beginning of the season but had come back from that. My scores kind of got lower throughout the season, and then at league and regionals I got some scores under par, and it had been a minute since I’d done that.
“I was feeling very confident coming into the tournament and just excited to try my best.”
After making four birdies to grab his share of the lead Tuesday, Museousky’s final round was guaranteed to be a little suspenseful – as long as he posted another low number. That’s because as an individual qualifier, he started an hour and on the opposite nine from Springer, who was part of the team competition with Eisenhower.
Springer, a fourth-place finisher at 5A state a year ago, remained in contention Wednesday by playing his first 15 holes in 1 over. But a three-putt from 25 feet at the par-3 seventh led to a bogey that gave Museousky the outright lead. Then, on Springer’s final hole, the par-4 ninth, his approach shot from the rough sailed left into the bunker, leaving him a must-make to force a playoff.
“I knew I was one down going to the last hole and I was going for a birdie,” Springer said. “I caught a flyer lie in the rough and flared a wedge left, and it went into the bunker.
“I was getting looks all day. I just couldn’t really roll anything in. You have those days in golf and I accept that.”
Blue Valley Southwest's Beau Sheldon shot a 2-under 69 in the Class 5A tournament's final round to tie for second individually.
Sheldon shot the low round of the tournament Wednesday, a 69 that matched his winning score from the 5A regional. But an opening 76 kept him from closing the gap on Museousky.
A tired Museousky, who tied for 12
th last year in his state debut, joked about going to bed at 7 p.m. after Wednesday’s victory. But he was energized by the two bogeys that not only kept him in contention, but ultimately led to the victory.
“Those definitely felt like birdies,” Museousky said. “I was very proud of those and excited to keep that momentum going to the next hole. I kind of just took a step back, took a couple deep breaths and thought, ‘OK, what do I have to do to make the best possible score out of this situation?’”
Josh Fratzel, who led St. James Academy to its second consecutive team title, tied for fourth with Leivian at 147. Leivian was among the group of golfers who warmly greeted Museousky after his win.
“This is definitely near the top,” Museousky said. “It’s got me feeling like I’m on a roll and there’s more to come.”
