All nine No. 1s in the KSHSAA Covered rankings emerged from Week 5 with victories, albeit in vastly different manners.
Class 1A No. 1 Inman survived a defensive slugfest with No. 3 Hutchinson Trinity, taking a 21-3 victory with the Celtics avoiding the shutout on a last-play field goal. Eight-Player Division I No. 1 Hill City, meanwhile, escaped an upset bid by Quinter, pulling out a 20-12 victory.
Other No. 1s cruised. None more so than 3A No. 1 Andale, which won by a jaw-dropping 108-0 margin over Nickerson.
Manhattan (6A), Mill Valley (5A), Bishop Miege (4A), Nemaha Central (2A), Axtell (Eight-Player Division I) and Cunningham (Six-Player) all posted victories by 31 points or more in staying on top of their respective classes.
There was minimal changes in the top-five rankings in each class.
In 6A, Blue Valley Northwest dropped out of the top five after a 27-26 loss to rival Blue Valley West, replaced at No. 5 by Junction City, which beat Washburn Rural 24-6. The Blue Jays get No. 1 and arch rival Manhattan this Friday.
In 4A, Wamego moved into the top 5 at No. 5 after dominating previously unbeaten Coffeyville 34-6. Eudora fell out of the top five after a 28-27 overtime loss to Louisburg.
In 2A, Ellsworth jumps into the top five following its 55-0 shutout of Lyons. The Bearcats have allowed just six points this season and posted four straight shutouts.
In 1A, Wabaunsee comes into the top five at No. 5 with Hutchinson Trinity falling out after its loss to Inman.
All other classes remained the same from last week, but things could get shaken up this week with some monster games on the schedule.
That includes a 1 vs. 2 showdown in 3A as Andale takes on Wichita Collegiate. Class 6A No. 2 Derby meets Class 5A No. 2 Maize. Eight-Player Division I will see No. 2 Meade take on No. 3 Leoti-Wichita County in a huge clash.
