CLASS 1A DIVISION I

8436
Norwichi's Kierstin Adams

KIERSTIN ADAMS, NORWICH

Adams has established herself as a spark plug in the middle for the Eagles, earning All-Heart of the Plains first-team honors last season along with now-graduated teammate Haley Sheetz. She led Norwich in kills (151) and hitting percentage (.239), and delivered 24 aces, 52 digs and 18 blocks. “Kierstin is a powerhouse on any team she plays for,” Norwich coach Hollie Carroll says. “Her excitement when blocking or getting a kill gets everyone in the gym pumped up.”

4386
Lakeside's Lauren Brummet

LAUREN BRUMMET, LAKESIDE

Brummet racked up 387 kills for the Knights last year as a junior, averaging 4.9 per set. She also led the team in total blocks with 25 and was second in both digs (245) and aces (46). She added 115 assists. Brummet was a first-team All-Northern Plains League pick and was honorable mention in Class 1A Division I on the Kansas Volleyball Association All-State team.  The Knights went 21-13 last year.

8210
Sylvan-Lucas' Emma Cline

EMMA CLINE, SYLVAN-LUCAS

Sylvan-Lucas will have to replace a lot of firepower from last year, but return a standout senior libero in Cline. She helped the Mustangs go 37-2 and reach the 1A Division I state tournament. Cline finished her junior season with 449 digs. She earned second-team All-Northern Plains League honors last year in her second year as a starter.

8337
Olpe's Grace Coughlin

GRACE COUGHLIN, OLPE

A 5-11 middle hitter, Coughlin led Olpe to the Class 1A Division I state tournament last season as the Eagles finished the season 24-18 and as runners-up in the Lyon County League. Coughlin’s defensive presence in the middle was so great she ranked atop the state in blocks for the season with 157 overall. She also added 181 kills and served better than 91% for the season. Coughlin earned first-team all-league honors and was an honorable mention All-Class 1A Division I pick.

8211
Little River's Alaina Eck

ALAINA ECK, LITTLE RIVER

A six-rotation player and four-year starter, Eck helped lead Little River to its first state championship since 1984 as the Redskins claimed the Class 1A Division I title and finished the season with a 40-4 record. Eck led a balanced attack with 346 kills and also added 321 digs on her way to being named the Class 1A Division I player of the year by the Kansas Volleyball Association. She was a first-team All-Wheat State League selection for the second straight year.

8338
Canton-Galva's Trinity Espinoza

TRINITY ESPINOZA, CANTON-GALVA

Espinoza’s arrival last year as a freshman had a huge impact on the Canton-Galva program as the Eagles improved from five wins in 2021 to 16 wins last season. Espinoza teamed with older sister Lili to give the Eagles a powerful 1-2 punch with Trinity leading the team in kills with 231. She also led the Eagles with 32 aces and was second in digs to Lili by three with 309. Espinoza was a first-team All-Wheat State League selection and with Lili having graduated will be an even bigger focus in the offense this season.

8441
Marmaton Valley's Janae Granere

JANAE GRANERE, MARMATON VALLEY

Granere led Marmaton Valley in kills last season with 173. Her numbers in that category could spike as the Wildcats look to replace the second-most 144 kills from outgoing senior Tayven Sutton. Granere’s 292 digs, 43 total blocks and 250 serves received were also team highs. She also has the most aces of a returning player with 59. Granere enters her senior year looking for her first all-state volleyball selection. She has been all-league in the Three Rivers League three times, including first team each of the previous two seasons. Granere helped lead Marmaton Valley to a 20-14 regular season record before getting bounced by Olpe in the sub-state semifinals.

8418
Pretty Prairie's Joley Harbaugh

JOLEY HARBAUGH, PRETTY PRAIRIE

Harbaugh stepped in as a first-year starter for a Pretty Prairie team coming off a runner-up finish in Class 1A Division I in 2021 and helped the Bulldogs not only return to state but finish fourth. She took over as the Bulldogs’ setter last year and had 651 assists, directing an attack that saw four players record at least 136 kills. All four of those hitters graduated so Harbaugh’s presence will be even bigger this year as the Bulldogs break in almost an entirely new cast around her.

8439
Colony Crest's Kayla Hermreck

KAYLA HERMRECK, COLONY-CREST

Hermreck earned Three Rivers all-league first-team honors each of the previous three seasons. The senior middle hitter helped lead Crest to a 26-7 regular season record and a top seed in the team’s sub-state bracket, only to get knocked off by a 9-19 Madison/Hamilton team in the sub-state semifinals.

8383
Washington County's Jesse Hoover

JESSE HOOVER, WASHINGTON COUNTY

Hoover has been a starter since her freshman season and as strong as her presence is along the front row, it’s her performance on the back row that’s made the biggest impact for the Tigers. Hoover handled more than half of the team’s serve receives and she also set a school record with 276 digs last year, averaging 25 per set. Hoover already has more than 500 career digs. Last year she also ranked second on the team with 200 kills and added a team-high 37 aces. She earned second-team All-Twin Valley League honors and in the spring helped Washington County win the Class 1A state track title.

8208
Spearville's Michaela Hubbell

MICHAELA HUBBELL, SPEARVILLE

Hubbell is the top returner for a Lancer team that lost six seniors from last year including all-staters Cameron Offerle and Tawney Krominga. After winning a state title in 2021, Spearville made state last year for the ninth time since 2011, getting knocked out in pool play. Hubbell, a middle hitter, put up a whopping 109 blocks in 2022 as a junior and has 239 career blocks. She was a second-team All-SPIAA selection.

8339
Doniphan West's Katie Johnson

KATIE JOHNSON, DONIPHAN WEST

Doniphan West enjoyed the best season in program history last year, finishing third at the Class 1A Division I state tournament and Johnson’s emergence as a sophomore was a big key to the breakthrough. Sharing middle blocker duties with fellow returner Malaina Whetstine, Johnson led the Mustangs in kills with 312 and blocks with 35 last season, earning second-team All-Twin Valley League honors. She also was second on the team in aces with 32. With the departure of three seniors, including a pair of first-team all-leaguers, Johnson will be counted on even more this season as the Mustangs look to get back to the state tournament.

8218
Kiowa County's Marley Little

MARLEY LITTLE, KIOWA COUNTY

Little is back to lead the Mavericks after helping them post a 26-11 record last year. She put up 342 kills, averaging 3.93 kills per set with a .234 hitting percentage. The senior has been an All-SPIAA performer in each of the last two seasons, earning first-team honors last year. She holds an offer from Kansas Wesleyan University.

8209
South Gray's Kaylee Moyer

KAYLEE MOYER, SOUTH GRAY

South Gray could be primed for a big season with the return of Moyer, along with fellow first-team All-SPIAA picks Jacelyn Huelskamp and Allie Reed. The Rebels went 33-7 last season, falling to Spearville in three sets in the sub-state finals. Moyer dished out 870 assists and delivered 72 aces last year. She will enter her senior season with 1,312 career assists and 141 aces. In addition to being a first-team all-league pick Moyer also earned second-team All-1A Division I honors.

8212
Little River's Aubrey Olander

AUBREY OLANDER, LITTLE RIVER

Little River’s weapons were numerous last year as the Redskins rolled to a 40-4 record at their first state title since 1984, taking the Class 1A Division I crown. Olander made perhaps the biggest jump of any Little River player a year ago, going from a complementary hitter in 2021 when she had 155 kills to one of Little River’s main attackers last year as she filled the middle role vacated by the departed Lilly Boughfman. Olander’s 305 kills ranked second on the team to 1A Division I player of the year Alaina Eck and her 102 blocks were a team-high. Olander joined Eck as a first-team All-Class 1A I and first-team All-Wheat State League selection.

8411
Flinthills' Harlee Randall

HARLEE RANDALL, FLINTHILLS

After making it all the way to the Class 1A Division I championship match last October, the future remains bright for Flinthills with the return of Randall, a junior middle hitter who earned all-state second-team recognition. The 6-foot Randall helped the Mustangs win 36 consecutive matches and the South Central Border League regular-season and tournament titles with a team-leading 382 kills (4.1 per set) on .385 hitting, 104 total blocks and 82 aces. Randall also made just three errors on 204 serve-receive chances. Her leadership role will increase with the graduation of all-state setter and outside hitter Karly Girty.

8376
Wichita Classical's Kayley Shanfelt

 KAYLEY SHANFELT, WICHITA CLASSICAL

Shanfelt’s development throughout her career paid dividends last season for Classical, which posted its first 20-win season and reached the sub-state finals a year ago. The senior outside hitter sharpened her attacking efficiency and finished with 261 kills, and highlighted her all-around skill with 70 aces and 267 digs. She’ll try to lead the Saints to their first state tournament berth this season before heading off to play at Covenant College in Georgia.

5386
Little River's Ashley Stephenson

ASHLEY STEPHENSON, LITTLE RIVER

Perhaps overshadowed a bit by teammates Alaina Eck and Aubrey Olander, Stephenson was no less important in helping Little River capture its first state championship since 1984 as the Redskins rolled to the Class 1A Division I state title. An honorable mention All-1A I selection, Stephenson complemented the first-team all-state duo nicely from her opposite hitter side, recording 162 kills and 55 blocks. Stephenson earned first-team All-Wheat State League honors as well.

8340
Doniphan West's Malaina Whetstine

MALAINA WHETSTINE, DONIPHAN WEST

Whetstine shared middle blocker duties with returning starter Katie Johnson and helped lead Doniphan West to the best state finish in program history as the Mustangs placed third at the 1A Division I state tournament. She ranked third on the team in kills with 197 and second in blocks with 25. A six-rotation player, Whetstine’s consistency no matter where she was on the court was something the Mustangs could count on and coach Andrea Keller is expecting a breakout season this year.

8341
Goessel's Brooklyn Wuest

BROOKLYN WUEST, GOESSEL

A knee injury hampered Wuest last year as a sophomore, forcing her into a more limited role and playing 20 fewer sets than the rest of the Goessel starters. She still managed to rank second on the team in kills with 182. Healthy for her junior season, the 5-foot-8 outside hitter should get back to the form that produced 220 kills her freshman season when she had a .305 kill percentage. Despite being limited last year, Wuest still was a first-team All-Wheat State League selection.
