CLASS 5A GIRLS SOCCER PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2025
Kapaun Mt. Carmel's Heide Bartel
HEIDE BARTEL, KAPAUN MT. CARMEL
Bartel provides Kapaun with a wealth of experience as a box-to-box midfielder. The senior and four-year starter scored two goals and dished out five assists last season to earn All-Class 5A second team and All-Greater Wichita Athletic League first team. In addition to serving as team captain, Bartel’s primary roles are to help the Crusaders maintain possession and build up attacks, as well as disrupt play with her midfield defense.
Seaman's Anna Becker
ANNA BECKER, SEAMAN
More known for her exploits on the basketball court where she led the Vikings to the 2024 Class 5A state championship and finished her career this season as Seaman’s career points, assists and steals leader, Becker has also been a dynamic force on the pitch. A four-year starter at a defensive midfielder, Becker finished last season with eight goals and three assists and was a first-team All-United Kansas Conference selection. She helped lead the Vikings to a 12-5-1 record and the Class 5A state quarterfinals.
Shawnee Heights' Bayli Benson
BAYLI BENSON, SHAWNEE HEIGHTS
A defender who also has been a key member of Heights’ offensive attack, Benson is a senior captain for the T-Birds. She earned first-team All-United Kansas Conference honors last year and was honorable mention All-Class 5A. She’s scored 21 career goals and has 13 career assists. She has signed with Kansas City Kansas Community College.
Shawnee Heights' Lailah Benz
LAILAH BENZ, SHAWNEE HEIGHTS
A senior midfielder, Benz returns to the T-Birds after playing club soccer her junior season. As a sophomore, Benz was first-team All-United Kansas Conference and honorable mention All-Class 5A while playing mostly center back. She’s scored 19 career goals and has signed with Kansas State.
Spring Hill's Hailey Bergmann
HAILEY BERGMANN, SPRING HILL
Bergmann earned All-Frontier League first-team honors as a defender for the second straight year, as well as earning an All-State honorable mention after landing on the All-State second team the year prior. In both those seasons, the Broncos were able to win the Frontier League title. That was quite an accomplishment for the team last year as Spring Hill had to replace multiple 2023 All-State selections at the forward position. Bergmann worked alongside then-senior goalkeeper Avery Young to keep the defense strong while a slew of freshmen gained experience on the offensive side of the ball. If those players take a jump forward, it should help relieve some of the pressure for Bergmann going into her senior year without Young in the goal.
St. Thomas Aquinas' Anisten Cabantac
ANISTEN CABANTAC, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
Cabantac dished out double-digit assists for the second straight year. Her 15 assists and 13 goals also earned her a second straight 5A midfielder of the year award to go with All-State and All-EKL first team honors. Cabantac ended up being one of three Saints, along with Brooklyn Marn and Maggie O’Keefe, to score more goals last season than the total number of goals the team allowed to their opponents, which was six.
De Soto's Sydney Cinotto
SYDNEY CINOTTO, DE SOTO
Cinotto, a junior, was a key factor in De Soto returning to the top of the United Kansas Conference last year after having its league title streak ended by Piper in 2023. Stats don’t tell the story for the three-year starter as she only had one goal and two assists last year and has just three goals and two assists in her career. But her presence in helping facilitate the Wildcats’ offense was reflected by her selection as a first-team all-league pick last season.
De Soto's Sydney Coffman
SYDNEY COFFMAN, DE SOTO
A four-year starter who can play both midfielder and defender positions, Coffman was the United Kansas Conference player of the year last year after helping lead the Wildcats to league championship after having its title streak snapped by Piper in 2023. Coffman scored 14 goals and added two assists last year and earned second-team All-Class 5A honors. Coffman entered her senior season with 33 goals scored.
Hutchinson's Rhyan Galyon
RHYAN GALYON, HUTCHINSON
Galyon landed on the All-Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division I first team for the second consecutive year in 2024, scoring 28 goals and adding eight assists as Hutchinson finished 9-7-1. She and fellow junior Azul Maciel made up a formidable scoring duo, combining for 51 goals. Galyon more than doubled her production from her freshman season, when she netted 12 goals and had six assists. “Rhyan is an integral component of our offensive strategy,” Salthawks coach Jordan Proffitt said. “Her relentless work ethic consistently generates multiple scoring opportunities for the team.”
Basehor-Linwood's Ella Graf
ELA GRAF, BASEHOR-LINWOOD
Graf was a key member of Basehor-Linwood’s defense last year, jumping right in as a freshman starter at both center back and as a defensive midfielder. Though she didn’t rack up huge stats, she helped the Bobcats to a 6-1 record in United Kansas Conference play, tying with De Soto for first but finishing second on the head-to-head tiebreaker. Graf earned first-team All-United Kansas Conference honors.
Maize South's Sydney Hansen
SYDNEY HANSEN, MAIZE SOUTH
Hansen, a junior, has been slowed by an early-season injury, but the Mavericks welcome her experience at forward after the graduation loss of high-scoring Kyndal Ewertz, who netted 135 career goals. Hansen played a solid complementary role last season, scoring 12 goals and adding 11 assists to join Ewertz on the All-Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division I first team. “Sydney’s speed and athleticism are hard to find in a high school athlete,” Mavs coach Rey Ramirez said. “She has a relentless and attack-minded style of play that truly presses opposing defensive lines.”
Bishop Carroll's Leah Henke (1)
LEAH HENKE, BISHOP CARROLL
Carroll coach Greg Rauch said Henke is playing as confidently as he’s ever seen her, a scary thought for those who have to deal with the Washburn signee. Henke, a four-year starter, became a two-time All-Class 5A first-team selection last spring after scoring 26 goals and adding nine assists to boost the Golden Eagles to a Greater Wichita Athletic League title and third-place finish in 5A. Henke scored 11 goals as a freshman and 24 as a sophomore, when Carroll went 19-2 and finished second at state to St. Thomas Aquinas. With another strong offensive season, Henke will have a chance to set a program record for career goals.
Seaman's Elle LaBin (right)
ELLE LABIN, SEAMAN
A three-year starter, Labin mans the left back spot for Seaman’s defense and helped the Vikings to a 12-5-1 mark last year and trip to the Class 5A state quarterfinals. LaBin scored her first career goal last year and also had an assist. She was one of four first-team All-United Kansas Conference selections for the Vikings last year, three of whom return this season.
Maize South's Genevieve LaMarche
GENEVIEVE LAMARCHE, MAIZE SOUTH
LaMarche’s senior season is already off to a good start after she was named MVP of the McPherson Invitational, which Maize South won with a 5-0 victory over the host Bullpups in the title game. A two-year starter, LaMarche scored 33 goals and had nine assists last season, earning all-state and all-league first-team honors as the Mavericks posted their fourth consecutive fourth-place finish in 5A. With school record-setting goal scorer Kyndal Ewertz off to play collegiately at Arkansas, LaMarche gives this year’s team a proven weapon. “Geni is just about the most exciting soccer player in the state,” Mavs coach Rey Ramirez said. “She plays with a unique level of enthusiasm and energy.”
Bishop Carroll's Itzelle Lumbreras
ITZELLE LUMBRERAS, BISHOP CARROLL
Lumberas, a junior center mid, has established herself as an orchestrator and facilitator for the Golden Eagles. A three-year starter, she earned All-Greater Wichita Athletic League first-team honors for the league champions, scoring eight goals and adding nine assists. “Itzelle controls the ball, the tempo and ultimately the game for us,” Carroll coach Greg Rauch said. “She has tactical awareness that far exceeds her age and can play nearly any ball necessary for her teammates.”
Hutchinson's Azul Maciel
AZUL MACIEL, HUTCHINSON
Maciel, a junior forward/midfielder, has emerged as a crucial component of the Salthawks’ offense. A two-year starter, she scored 23 goals and added 14 assists last season, drawing attention away from leading goal scorer Rhyan Galyon. Maciel joined Galyon on the All-Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division I first team. “Her aggressive play and strength on the field enable us to maintain possession and score goals,” Hutchinson coach Jordan Proffitt said.
St. Thomas Aquinas' Brooklyn Marn
BROOKLYN MARN, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
Marn had already shown her penchant for scoring during her sophomore campaign in 2023. That year’s squad was led by Sydney Watts heading into her senior year following a 37-goal campaign in her own sophomore year. While Watts still delivered 21 goals in her final season, Marn was also able to carve out 13 goals of her own. Last year, Marn ended up producing 18 goals while also racking up 16 assists. That was during a season in which the Saints only allowed six goals to their opposition.
Seaman's Ryin Miller (8)
RYIN MILLER, SEAMAN
Like teammate Anna Becker, Miller is more well known for her success in another sport. In Miller’s case, it’s two, including one that coincides with her soccer season. The dual spring-sport standout who also runs track, Miller has established herself as one of the best distance runners the state has ever produced, posting top three all-time state times in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 last spring and then setting the state record in cross country this fall. But Miller is also accomplished in soccer as well and is a three-year starter for the Vikings at forward. Last year, she scored 9 goals and led the Vikings with 14 assists, earning first-team All-United Kansas Conference honors. She’s racked up 20 goals and 21 assists in her first two seasons.
Hays' Kinslee Newell
KINSLEE NEWELL, HAYS
The junior winger has started for the Indians since her freshman season. Hays coach Tyler Rueschhoff says Newell has elite speed. She scored a team-high 11 goals and had eight assists last season for the Indians, who went 11-7 in 2024. Newell entered this season with 25 goals and 15 assists for her career. The return of Dani Willeford should also give the Indians a scoring boost this season. Willeford, a Kansas City Community College signee, had a big sophomore season in 2023 before deciding to play softball and focusing on club soccer last year as a junior. She’s back out for her senior season and scored four goals through the Indians first four games this season while Newell scored three goals in that stretch. Newell was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection last year.
Maize South's Hadley Ostrander
HADLEY OSTRANDER, MAIZE SOUTH
While high-scoring forwards and midfielders have drawn a lot of attention for Maize South in recent seasons, Ostrander has been a solid performer in goal since her freshman season. Now a senior, Ostrander logged the lion’s share of minutes as Maize South yielded just eight goals during a run of 19 victories to start the 2024 season before a 7-5 state semifinal scorefest loss to Blue Valley Southwest. The Fort Hays State commit earned All-5A second-team honors for the second straight season and was selected All-Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division I first team.
St. James Academy's Avery Rasmussen (left)
AVERY RASMUSSEN, ST. JAMES ACADEMY
Rasmussen earned All-State and All-EKL first-team honors for the second straight season last spring following her performance as a junior midfielder. She helped lead the Thunder to a 10-5-1 record, only for them to see their season end before the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2021. St. James lost 2-0 against eventual state champion St. Thomas Aquinas in the regional finals. Rasmussen will be a senior leader for a team with lots of promising underclassmen talent looking to get another regional title streak started.
Great Bend's Jillian Reimer
JILLIAN REIMER, GREAT BEND
Reimer is back to lead the Panthers after earning first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors last season. She was the team’s leading scorer in 2024. Great Bend will look to improve on last year’s 4-13 season. The Panthers are off to a good start, sitting 2-1 after three games. Reimer is tied for Great Bend’s single-game goal record after scoring six during the 2023 season.
Blue Valley Southwest's Izzy Ross
IZZY ROSS, BLUE VALLEY SOUTHWEST
Ross earned All-State first team and All-EKL honorable mention honors at midfielder as a junior last year. She helped lead Blue Valley Southwest to a 17-3-0 season as the Timberwolves finished as the 5A state runner-up. Ross will look to help lead a team that graduated three All-State first-team selections, including a combined 59 goals from last year in Hannah Palmer and Hope Kim.
Kapaun Mt. Carmel's Annabelle Schaefer
ANNABELLE SCHAEFER, KAPAUN MT. CARMEL
Much like her older brother Holden did for Kapaun’s boys teams in recent seasons, Schaefer has provided a formidable presence defensively for the Crusader girls. A three-year starter, Schaefer, a junior, plays primarily as a center back but can also fill in at defensive midfielder. Schaefer, a team captain, received All-Class 5A second-team and All-Greater Wichita Athletic League first-team honors last season. She gives Kapaun an aerial threat on set plays and corner kicks.
Shawnee Heights' Isabell Van Fleet
ISABELL VAN FLEET, SHAWNEE HEIGHTS
A senior captain for the T-Birds, Van Fleet was a first-team All-United Kansas Conference selection as both a freshman and junior and a second-team pick as a sophomore. She earned second-team All-Class 5A honors each of the past two seasons. The forward has 36 career goals and 18 career assists and has signed with Hutchinson Community College.
Bishop Carroll's Madeline Weed
MADELINE WEED, BISHOP CARROLL
Bishop Carroll has made a habit of playing suffocating defense, and Weed fit that mold last year as a freshman center back. She played a significant role in helping the Golden Eagles post 12 shutouts on their way to a third-place finish in 5A. Weed was chosen to the All-5A second team and All-Greater Wichita Athletic League first team as a defender. “Maddie locks down the back line for us as she is very fast and has incredible technical ability,” Carroll coach Greg Rauch said.
Spring Hill's Elizabeth Williams (left)
ELIZABETH WILLIAMS, SPRING HILL
Williams earned All-State honorable mention and All-Frontier League first-team honors at forward as a junior last year. Williams was one of the few experienced Broncos on the front line or in the midfield, but her leadership helped young players like freshmen forwards Jane Hughes and Taylor Hines develop enough for the team to capture a second straight Frontier League title.
