BELOIT – Burlingame’s JD Tyson enjoyed a record-setting day through the air as the East rolled to a 58-0 victory over the West in the Kansas 8-Man Division II All-Star Game on Saturday at Trojan Field.

Tyson matched his jersey number with eight touchdown passes in the rout, shattering the previous record of six in the 40-year history of the event.

The East opened up its aerial assault early, starting with a 46-yard bomb to Frankfort’s Carter Olson on the first possession. The East went on to take a 28-0 lead into the break after Olson caught a 5-yard TD with 14 seconds left in the half.

“We had a lot of speed offensively and we knew if we hit ‘em underneath early, over the top would open up later in the game,” Tyson said.

Olson was Tyson’s favorite target with three touchdowns grabs. Marmaton Valley’s Jaedon Granere caught touchdowns passes of 26 and 31 yards while Frankfort’s Lane Louiseau, Burlingame’s Dane Winters and Blue Valley Randolph’s Landon Sump caught one TD each.

The previous all-star game record for passing TDs was shared by Baileyville B&B’s Dustin Rottinghaus (2014) and Quivira Heights’ Gunner Phelan (2011).

“(Setting the record was) pretty easy with all the weapons around me,” Tyson said.

Powerhouse Axtell had its fingerprints on the shutout with Eli Broxterman, Rilyn Buessing and Daltyn Heinen representing the Eagles. Axtell has won 52 straight games and four consecutive state championships.

Broxterman and Buessing played alongside each other at the linebacker spots, delivering heavy hits.

“I knew we were going to have a good time out here,” said Broxterman, a Baker signee. “I knew we had the capability to do what we did today.

“It means a lot,” Broxterman said of playing with his Axtell teammates. “They’re my brothers. For me to play one last game with them, it’s a special moment. It’s special now, and it’s going to be special later.”

A running clock was used for most of the fourth quarter after the East went up 50-0.

The 58-point margin of victory was an 8-man All-Star Game record, but it was broken a few hours later with the West’s 72-0 win in the Division I game.

“These guys were loose and free throughout the week,” said East head coach Max Mickunas from Marmaton Valley. “They came together as a unit and really started to become friends with each other. They believed in the vision we had for them and executed the game plan.”
