The occasional barking sounds, Sterling senior Wyatt Newberry says, are the product of a Black Bears coaching staff affectionately calling its defensive unit a bunch of dogs.

“We all kind of embrace that,” said Newberry, an All-Class 1A defensive back last season. “Whenever somebody makes a big play, we’re all kind of barking out there. Just kind of making a big deal out of something.”

Sterling is putting plenty of old dogs out on the field this season, and the results so far have been, well, among the best in show. After opening the season with a 47-6 victory over Sedgwick, Sterling improved to 2-0 on Friday by handling Moundridge 27-15 in its first road test. The Black Bears climbed into this week’s KSHSAA Covered’s 1A rankings at No. 5.

Twelve of the 48 players on Sterling’s roster returned with varsity starting experience this season, including Newberry, the Black Bears’ top tackler a year ago, and senior running back/defensive back Zane Farney, who provided a lightning bolt against Moundridge with a 67-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage.

“Just because of our experience and returning a bunch of starters, we were ready to go Week 1,” said Farney, who ran 21 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns in Friday’s victory. “We were ready to get our stuff in. Installing it didn’t feel like baby steps. We were just ready to go right off the bat.”

By doing so, Sterling avenged last season’s losses to Sedgwick and Moundridge, flipping the script on its 0-2 start from a year ago. The Black Bears rallied to win six of their final eight games, fueling optimism for 2025.

“We got off to a little bit of a late start last year, and then we started playing some playing some really good football after we got some things taken care of,” Sterling coach Brent Schneider said. “We kind of wanted to make a statement with some of these early-season games, and I’ve just been proud of the kids.

“They buy in, they play physical football. We really put a lot of emphasis on playing fast, physical defense, and I think it’s really showing.”

Moundridge pulled even on its first possession with a 9-play, 76-yard drive, using 64 rushing yards from senior quarterback Kaizer Kanitz to fuel a touchdown march. But Sterling shut off the Wildcats for much of the rest of the game, intercepting Kanitz three times, with Newberry, junior Derwyn Maxwell and junior Jace Darnauer each collecting one.

Meanwhile, the Black Bears displayed their physicality on offense, compiling all 302 yards of total offense on the ground. In addition to Farney’s big game, Newberry added 9 carries for 96 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

“It’s nice to have an experienced backfield, and then the o-line is always stepping up big and making big-time blocks,” Newberry said. “I just feel we mesh together really well. We’re always cheering for each other and then when somebody messes up, we’re lifting them up.”

Six Sterling football players were on the Black Bears’ basketball team that won the Class 2A basketball title in March, a journey that ended with a 56-42 victory over Moundridge in the championship game. Newberry, Farney and junior Cameron Morris were starters.

That experience provided a boost of confidence heading into the football season, which continues Friday at home against Inman (2-0).

“Something that we were talking about in weights the other day, we were looking at our trophy case and the only state football championship was in 1982,” Farney said. “We’d definitely like to place some new hardware in the trophy case.

“Knowing that we’ve done something like that and winning on such a big stage in basketball is really fueling us.”
