Senior Evan Goates successfully defended his Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail I singles title and led Maize South to the league team championship on Monday.
Goates, the reigning Class 5A champion, defeated teammate Landon Cook 6-1, 6-1 in the final to help the host Mavericks finish with 49 points, six ahead of runner-up Valley Center. Valley Center’s tandem of Braxton Nicholson and Gabe Shaffer repeated as league doubles champions, outlasting Maize South’s Tucker Lowe and Jacob Kurniadi 3-6, 7-6 (5), 11-9.
Goates dropped just three games in three matches to improve to 28-1 heading into Friday’s 5A regional tournament at Andover Central.
In addition to the top two singles finishers and doubles runner-up, the Mavericks got a third-place doubles finish from Preston Heard and Jack Pringle. Both Maize South teams defeated the top seeds, Valley Center’s Charlie Anderson and Lucas Balthrop, to help the Mavs establish their winning margin.

- Reigning 5A team champion Andover swept singles and doubles titles to win the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail II team championship Monday in Goddard. Junior Andrew Chan protected his top seed and defeated Andover Central’s Elias Kachelmeier 6-1, 6-3 in the singles final, while juniors Blake Swindler and Will Rather topped senior teammates Ian Brown and Jack Powell 6-4, 6-4 for the doubles crown. Andover finished with 49 points, 11 ahead of runner-up Andover Central, which got a third-place doubles finish from senior Ryan Byun and junior Carson Butler.
- Playing without standouts Charlie Gentile and Maddox Drumright, Wichita Collegiate still managed to cruise to the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail III-IV team title, sweeping the singles and doubles titles in Monday’s tournament at Buhler. The Spartans scored 60 points, led by Vihaan Ganganala and Harry Hoover’s 1-2 finish in singles along with a doubles championship from G. Farha and James Nolan. McPherson finished second with 43 points as the doubles team of Jonas Emery and Mason Eisenbarth took third.
- Bishop Carroll swept four championship matches against Kapaun Mt. Carmel to win the Greater Wichita Athletic League title on Monday at Wichita’s Riverside Tennis Center. Carroll sophomore Brandon Steven defeated Kapaun junior Gabe Baalman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Carroll senior Luke Ronsick topped Kapaun senior Anson Kwan 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. In doubles, Carroll’s Gabe Weber and Braeden Dugan improved to 23-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kapaun’s John and Andrew Korfhage at No. 1 doubles, while Carroll seniors Brady Haight and Henry Husband defeated Kapaun seniors Jude Simon and Christian Romer 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
- Led by No. 1 doubles champions Braiden Liechty and Tim van Bergeijk, Hesston scored 65 points to edge runner-up Hoisington for the Central Kansas League team title on Monday in Lindsborg. The Swather seniors topped Smoky Valley’s Jack Bieker and Pierce Keller 6-2, 7-6 (3) in the finals. Hesston made it a doubles sweep, as Ben Bartlett and Jerick Humphreys defeated Smoky Valley’s Kyle Robledo -Diaz and Braden Erickson 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 bracket. Hesston also got a runner-up finish from Janmejay Patwardhan at No. 1 singles. Patwardhan fell to Hoisington’s top-seeded Jasper Pawlowski 6-3, 6-2 in the title match. Hoisington, which finished with 58 points, also got a title from Gabriel Pawlowski at No. 2 singles. He defeated Hesston’s Henry White 6-4, 6-1 in their championship match.
- Sterling collected titles in three of the four brackets to win the Central Plains League title on Monday in Wichita. Jace Darnauer dropped just one game in three matches at No. 1 singles, defeating Conway Springs’ Grayson Allen 6-1, 6-0 in the final. Lathem Kizzar went 4-0 in round-robin play to win the No. 2 singles title, and Ben Bierstedt and Trace DeShon capped an unbeaten day at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Wichita Trinity’s Blane Farley and Owen Holdeman. Sterling finished with 44 points, while Conway Springs was second with 29.
SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS GOLF STANDOUTS
- Andover Central shot four-man team scores of 319 at Newton’s Sand Creek and 299 at Hesston Golf Course to win the I-135 Shootout on Tuesday. Central’s Colt Farrow fired a 3-under 69 for medalist honors at Sand Creek, while Andover’s Brody Fox topped the field with a 4-under 67 at Hesston. Central’s two-round total of 618 was 12 shots ahead of runner-up Andover. Fox edged Circle’s Anderson Helmer for medalist honors at Hesston, though Helmer’s 67 set a Thunderbird school record.
- Wichita Trinity senior Alex Majors fired a 1-under 71 to earn medalist honors and lead the Knights to the Cheney Invitational title on Tuesday. Trinity’s four-man scored of 309 edged runner-up Andale by two shots. Wellington’s Ethan Brungardt was second individually with a 75.
