WICHITA -- The final step of St. Thomas Aquinas' title run looked a lot like the rest of its season for the state's gold-standard program.
Aquinas' depth and goal-by-committee attack proved too much for Eisenhower in the Class 5A title game on Saturday at Stryker Complex, with the Saints breaking away with four second-half goals for a 5-0 win.
The Saints had five different goal scorers as they captured the program's state-best 21st state title and fifth in the last six seasons.
“That’s kind of been our motto all year,” Aquinas coach Dan Brown said. “We’ve had different girls contribute to every single game we’ve had. We’ve had so many goal scorers.
“Our slogan has always been ‘One God, One Team, One More.’ It’s always the next person stepping up. Sometimes maybe our stars had an off game, and it was the next person stepping up. That’s really the way it’s been all season.”
Senior midfielder Amri Eischen set the tone with a first-half goal for the lone tally before intermission. The Saints hit Eisenhower with a barrage in the second half with goals from junior Reese John, junior Kate Gibson, sophomore Bridget Powell and senior Kennedy Miller.
The Saints (17-3) have had 13 different goal scorers on the season, with junior Angelina Dicola (18), senior Maura Maher (13) and freshman John (9) leading the way.
“It's so fun,” Eischen said. “Our whole team was in it, and I think that's the reason why we were so successful. We’re able to play together, even throughout the whole season.”
Eisenhower, making its first title game appearance, played with the Saints in the first half but was unable to recover after John put Aquinas up 2-0 early in the second half.
“I thought the first half was pretty back and forth even,” Eisenhower coach Roger Downing said. “The second half, they scored that first goal and we started to make some adjustments and it kind of got away from us a little bit.
“But we came in like: We're not going to lose 1-0. If we're going to go down, we're going to throw our numbers forward. We just got caught.”
Brown said the Saints were able to take advantage of the wind in the second half.
“We really knew how we wanted to play. We got a little bit out of that in the first half,” Brown said. “We took some advantage of some things. This wind makes it really crazy. Once we knew we had the wind, we got some corner kicks, and that's a strength.
“We focus a lot on our set pieces. Getting a couple of those off corner kicks put us in a spot where we could close it out.”
Junior goalkeeper Jules Elliott earned her 13th shutout of the season.
The Saints' only in-state loss came early in the season against St. James. Aquinas pulled out a tight 3-2 quarterfinal win against De Soto before beating Kapaun Mt. Carmel 4-0 in the semifinals.
Underclassmen have played big roles for the Saints throughout the season.
“Early on, I knew it would be good. We had some really special underclassmen,” Brown said. “We only have four seniors on this team and four juniors as well. A lot of freshmen showed us that they could play at this level, and that really gave us that extra edge to get over that hump.
“Only three of the girls here were in the state title game two years ago. So not a lot of experience at this tournament, and we were fortunate to get out of Monday’s game. De Soto was a battle. They showed great perseverance all year.”
Aquinas' seniors are Eischen, Maher, Miller and Olivia Giammanco.
“It means everything to go out on top,” Eischen said. “That's all we wanted. We wanted to finish strong, and I think we did that.”
Eisenhower ended its breakthrough season with a 19-2 record.
“I told the girls, ‘If you said at the start of the year that we were going to get second in the state and have 19 wins, you guys would all look at me like I was crazy,’” Downing said. “It was a fantastic year. I'm proud of the girls. I know all of our parents and staff are proud of the girls as well.
“We’ll be back.”
