The Jaguars have not only won four straight state championships and only lost nine games over those seasons, they started this year with seven straight wins while allowing just five goals. They won't take that win streak to eight games, though. Blue Valley Northwest upset the Jags with a 4-3 double overtime win April 26 at Blue Valley District Athletic Complex in Stillwell. The Huskies were one of the most unlikely suspects for knocking off the Jags, at least on paper. Blue Valley Northwest entered Tuesday's matchup with a 3-7 record after a four game losing streak, although three losses were in overtime. Blue Valley Northwest head coach Michelle Pothoven said the team has not been a full strength for most of the season. "We came back in full force tonight," Pothoven said. "The girls battled. They battled hard, they worked together and they communicated. They just fought tonight." Both teams went scoreless for the first 17 minutes of extra time before Blue Valley Northwest freshman Izzy De Buyl, who returned for her first game since having her gallbladder removed, nearly made her second go-ahead goal of the game. "She laid it out on the field, literally, until she got laid out," Pothoven said. With no defenders between her and the goal, De Buyl dribbled the ball around Blue Valley West freshman goalie Zinesh Holt, who opted to tackle De Buyl to prevent a wide-open shot. Holt went to the bench with a red card and De Buyl needed to be assisted off the field. After checking on De Buyl, Pothoven asked around to see who wanted to take the penalty kick. "Chloe Dillbeck said 'I got it, Coach' and she buried it," Pothoven said. Dillbeck said she was "super hyped" to get the nod from her coach with the game on the line. She made sure all the pressure was on the Jaguars backup goalie. "I made eye contact with the goalie and looked at one side of the goal, then took it to the other side," Dillbeck said. "I tried to get in her head." The plan worked as Dillbeck placed the ball into the left side of the net to score the golden goal and give Blue Valley West its first loss of the season. Blue Valley West had a fare share of opportunities to hold off the Huskies in this one. The Jags struck first as freshman Kyra Bowman earned a goal five minutes into the game. It took the Huskies awhile to respond, but junior Abby Allen evened up the score with a high arcing shot that dipped under the crossbar. Holt got her hands on the ball, but could not avoid going with it into the net. With a 1-all tie at half, it was the Huskies that struck first out of the break. De Buyl gave the Huskies a lead with a goal on a free kick from the penalty arc. The Jags tied the game up with 19 minutes left when Abby Fries used a header to send the ball into the net off a free kick from Grace Bartlett. It only took three minutes for Blue Valley West to score again when junior Alexis Morrison nailed a penalty kick. Blue Valley West looked to hold on for another victory, but the Huskies kept pressing the action as the clock dwindled down under a minute. It looked like time would run out when Holt ran up and helped deflect the ball away from the net on a Huskies corner kick. But the ball rolled to Huskies senior Megan Yates, who navigated around the crumbling wall of players to find an open net for the tying goal with nine seconds remaining. After securing the win in the second overtime, the Huskies moved to 4-7. They head to Jefferson City, Missouri for a Friday, April 29 matchup with host Capital City in the Lady Jays Soccer Shootout. After securing the win in second overtime, the Huskies picked up another win April 30 against Hickman with a 3-1 victory during the Lady Jays Soccer Shootout in Jefferson City, Missouri. Blue Valley Northwest will face St. James Academy on Tuesday, May 3 at home. Blue Valley West will have to wait to get back into the win column after ending its second straight double overtime game without scoring a goal in extra time. The Jaguars avoided a second loss, however, in its 1-1 tie against Blue Valley on April 28. Blue Valley West will face Aquinas, which remains undefeated after 1-1 tie against St. James Academy on April 29, in a Tuesday, May 3 matchup that could ultimately decide the Eastern Kansas League champion.
