KANSAS HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER COACHES ASSOCIATION ALL-STATE TEAMS
After successfully defending the Class 5A championship and winning its state-leading 18th title in program history, St. Thomas Aquinas dominated the individual awards on the All-State teams announced by the Kansas High School Soccer Coaches Association on Wednesday.
Junior Sydney Watts was named 5A's forward of the year, senior Abby Hanson received the top midfielder honor and senior Assa Kante added the defender of the year award for the Saints, who capped a 17-0-2 season with a 2-1 victory over Mill Valley in the 5A championship game. Aquinas sophomore Andi Rylance was also named a 5A first-team midfielder as the Saints had six players named to the all-state squad.
Sophomore Addison Tauscher of St. James Academy was named 5A's goalkeeper of the year after helping the Thunder win a regional title. Mill Valley's Jason Pendleton earned 5A coach of the year.
In Class 6A, Blue Valley West senior Grace Bartlett shared midfielder of the year honors with Washburn Rural's Belle Kennedy, and outgoing BV West coach Alex Aiman was named 6A coach of the year after leading the Jaguars to their fifth consecutive state title. Junior Reece Walrod and sophomore Lydia Ungashick joined Bartlett on the All-6A first team for BV West, which edged Rural 2-0 in the state final to finish 16-3-1.
Blue Valley's Bella Field and Olathe Northwest's Mimi Hallier shared the 6A forward of the year honor. Olathe West's Lily Hendrickson was named defender of the year and Olathe North's Katie Stospkoph received recognition as the top goalkeeper.
Bishop Miege reaped the rewards of its fifth consecutive state title, led by Class 4-1A goalkeeper of the year Livi Shull, co-defender of the year Ella Howard and co-coach of the year Nate Huppe. Howard shared the top defender honor with McPherson's Sydney Achilles, while Achilles' coach, Chris Adrian, was also honored after leading the Bullpups to a third-place finish in 4-1A.
Senior Aubrey Tanksley of state runner-up Buhler was named 4-1A forward of the year, while McPherson senior Lauren Labertew earned the midfielder honor.
The organization also selected five referees of the year: Gordon Wetmore, Drew Klempf, Jorge Magana, Matt Weigant and Randy Ashburn
