OLATHE — For one final afternoon, the gym floor at Olathe East was a stage — and Olathe Northwest junior Sophia Beaumont gave Kansas high school gymnastics the sendoff it deserved.
In the final meet of the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s gymnastics era, Beaumont delivered a fitting finale, winning her second straight all-around state championship Saturday with a 38.625, edging Shawnee Mission East’s Andi Prendiville (37.475) in an emotional finish that marked the end of more than 50 years of sanctioned competition.
“It’s an amazing feeling to be able to win my last meet,” Beaumont said. “But more than that, I just wanted to be proud of myself. I actually fell on beam, but maybe that’s a sign I should keep going — that my gymnastics career isn’t done yet.”
Beaumont, who became a legend last year with perfect 10s on vault and beam, once again showed her mastery. She captured individual titles on vault (9.875), bars (9.55) and floor (9.9), capping an afternoon filled with both brilliance and bittersweet emotion.
“At every stop, I thought, ‘This is the last time I’ll do this in high school,’” she said. “It was sad, but it gave me hope for the future. Even though it won't be in high school, I don't want to stop doing gymnastics.”
Olathe Northwest's Sophia Beaumont won the vault with a score of 9.875 which helped her win her second straight all-around title.
Her coach, Amanda Harrington, said Beaumont’s ability to balance the weight of the moment with precision was what made her special.
“I thought Sophia did absolutely incredible,” Harrington said. “She was battling a lot of emotions with it being the end and to watch her go out there and be successful was amazing. She had really been working this season on sticking her landings and she did just that yesterday. I am so proud of her. She truly competed with her heart on her sleeve.”
Behind her, Prendiville turned in a career-best performance highlighted by a stunning 9.800 on floor that brought here coach to tears.
Shawnee Mission East's Andi Prendiville was all smiles following her floor routine Saturday at the state meet.
“Halfway through her routine, I just knew it was her best ever,” said East coach Sarah Hink. “When the score came up, the crowd erupted, and seeing Andi’s smile made everything worth it.”
Teammate Bella Drier, who returned to gymnastics this year after several seasons in competitive cheer, finished fourth all-around (36.75) in what Hink called “the perfect comeback story.”
“She had to rebuild her skills and push through pain,” Hink said. “But she came out and performed fearlessly. That’s the kind of heart you dream of as a coach.”
And on her home floor, Olathe East’s Kailynn Sparks claimed her own place in state history, capturing the beam title with a 9.675 — the last beam gold KSHSAA will ever award.
Olathe East's Kailynn Sparks won the state title in the beam with a score of 9.675 on Saturday at her home school.
“I was so excited to see Kailynn win a state championship as an individual,” Harrington said. “She works so hard day in and day out and no one is more deserving. The way she practices beam with intention is the reason she won that state championship.
In the team race, Olathe North completed a five-year dynasty with 110.25 points, holding off Shawnee Mission East (109.675) for its fifth straight title — a record that will stand untouched as the sport exits the state scene.
When the medals were handed out and the last photos were taken, the tears began to flow. For Beaumont and the dozens of gymnasts who spent their seasons defying gravity, Saturday was more than a meet — it was goodbye.
Olathe Northwest's Sophia Beaumont fights back tears after winning her second straight all-around title.
“That was probably the hardest part,” Beaumont said. “Celebrating with the girls and knowing it was the last time we’d all be together. They’re my best friends. I couldn’t have imagined ending it with anyone else.”
With that, Kansas high school gymnastics took its final bow — and Beaumont, fittingly, stuck the landing.
