2024 Review: Even coming off three straight state championships, Olathe North had a bunch of unknowns as it went for a fourth straight title last fall. The Eagles graduated three seniors who accounted for seven of the team’s 10 individual medals, including all-around runner-up Lindsey Ray – the individual champion on the balance beam and floor exercise – and multi-event placer Hannah Jensen. A promising sophomore class was there to fill the voids, but the question remained how would they perform on the biggest stage. Making things even tougher, rival Olathe Northwest was adding ultra-talented sophomore Sophia Beaumont to go with two-time reigning all-around champion Emmy Keller. But North and its young roster was more than up to the challenge. Returning senior Greer Moyer stepped up and led the young Eagles to not only a fourth straight title, but a record-setting performance. Moyer capped her career with a runner-up finish in the all-around while Ariana Easter wound up sixth. Olivia Noteboom (eighth) and Laila Haferland (10th) also were top 10 in the all-around and North wound up with a team total of 112.200 that was not only 2.500 points ahead of Northwest, but also broke the previous state meet team total record of 112.150 set in Derby in 1999. While Northwest fell short in ending North’s three-year reign, the Ravens got to celebrate some history of their own at the meet. Keller wasn’t able to pull off the all-around three-peat, finishing third. But Beaumont’s debut was darn near perfect, and in some instances, was perfect. The sophomore became the first gymnast ever to record a perfect 10 in an event at state, and did it twice, hitting the perfect score on both the vault and balance beam. She and Keller also tied the state-meet record on the uneven bars with scores of 9.80 with Beaumont taking the title. For good measure, she also added the floor exercise title, giving her a clean sweep of the state meet and her all-around total of 39.500 shattered the previous state meet record of 38.413 set by Olathe North’s Ella Margheim in 2021. Shawnee Mission East placed two in the all-around top six – Claire Rogers in fourth and Andi Prendiville in sixth – to finish third as a team with 107.500 points, 2.400 ahead of fourth-place Olathe East.

2025 Contenders: This will be the final season of high school gymnastics as a KSHSAA-sanctioned sport with only a handful of schools still fielding teams. And unless something drastic happens, Olathe North will finish the sport’s 52-year run with an unprecedented fifth straight title, breaking the tie the Eagles currently have with Kapaun Mt. Carmel (1979-82) and Wichita South (1974-77), who also won four straight. The Eagles graduated just one senior off last year’s title team, though that loss is a big one as Greer Moyer not only was the Eagles’ emotional leader, but also finished runner-up in the all-around her final season. But even without Moyer, the Eagles have more than enough to force another program to come up with something big to end their reign as a junior foursome stepped in a year ago as sophomores and filled some big holes from the 2023 team. Ariana Easter led the group with a fifth-place finish in the all-around, placing in the top six in three of the four events as well. Olivia Noteboom and Laila Haferland each just missed out on top-10 finishes in the all-around with Noteboom placing eighth and Haferland finishing 10th. Each also placed top six in an individual event, as did fellow sophomore Macie Ray. With four of the top six returning placers, North is the overwhelming favorite again this year. Speaking of overwhelming favorites, there’s also one for the individual all-around crown and the only question is how can Olathe Northwest junior Sophia Beaumont possibly top what she did at state as a sophomore? In her first year competing for Northwest after an accomplished club career, Beaumont left her mark in a historic way last year. She became the first gymnast in state history to record a perfect 10 score at state, hitting the mark twice, on the vault and balance beam. She tied the state meet record on the uneven bars as well and set the state meet record for all-around with a total of 39.500. She helped lead Northwest to a runner-up team finish, but will need some teammates to step up this season to help fill the void left by Emmy Keller, who graduated after being the all-around champion in 2022 and 2023 before Beaumont displaced her last year. Northwest’s bid for a team trophy will be hindered by not having a full roster this fall. Third as a team a year ago, Shawnee Mission East also has a big hole to fill in its lineup with the graduation of Claire Rogers, who took fourth in the all-around. Andi Prendiville was sixth in the all-around last year and will lead the Lancers this season. Olathe East was fourth as a team last year and returns its top finisher in the all-around as Kailynn Sparks finished seventh. The Hawks only had three gymnasts at state last year, however, but this year will field a full squad and will be in the hunt for a team trophy. The dark horse this season is Olathe South, which placed fifth as a team last year. The Falcons return their entire squad from last year and was led by the trio of Mia Thompson, Savannah Roberts and Keira Spence, who finished 14th, 15th and 16th, respectively, in the all-around standings.
